Winston Churchill painting owned by Angelina Jolie makes more than £8 million at auction

A wartime painting by Sir Winston Churchill has sold for £8,285,000 at auction in London.

The 1943 artwork, depicting a scene in Marrakesh, is thought to be the only painting the former prime minister completed during the Second World War.

'Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque' smashed expectations by surpassing the upper estimation of £2.5m by more than threefold.

It was sold by the actress Angelina Jolie on Monday at Christie's auction house, which said the price is a new record for a Churchill painting.

It added that the piece is, in its opinion, "Churchill’s most important work".

Sir Winston originally gifted the piece to then US president Franklin D Roosevelt as a memento of their visit to the Moroccan capital in the same year, 1943.

The wartime prime minister created hundreds of paintings throughout his life, around 45 of which depict landscapes in Morocco.
