Winning trophies ‘has to be ambition’ for Newcastle United this season amid Alexander Isak ‘intent’

Winning a trophy has to be the aim for Newcastle United according to Charlie Adam. The Magpies have not won a domestic cup since their 1954-55 FA Cup win over Manchester City.

Eddie Howe has spoken of his ambition to write his own chapter in Newcastle's history and the Carabao Cup could prove the best avenue for success. The Toon second string came from behind to beat League Two side Tranmere Rovers and tee up a third round tie with Crystal Palace.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Adam said: "It's very difficult to win silverware, over the last few years it's been the big two that have won it, apart from Leicester who won a trophy. I think that has got to be the ambition for a club like Newcastle where they've got to go and try and get a trophy.

"Resting players [against Tranmere] was always going to happen, with what that group of players put in against Man City and you give players an opportunity to show you what you can. They'll try to invest into this group between now and next week when the window closes.

"They've got a bit of money to spend. I think they've bought wisely since January, Eddie's done a great job. He'll be trying to get minutes into these lads because it looks like Callum Wilson has another injury that he has to resolve.

"He'll be trying to get minutes into these players and if they can get the lad over the line from Sociedad then it just shows the intent they've got. Spending £60million on a player is a lot of money for Newcastle and they're looking to push into that top ten in the Premier League."
