Winners of Beat the Street presented with prizes after racking up the miles

The winners of the recent Beat the Street East Kilbride competition were officially presented with their prizes.

Groups topping the total and average points leader boards came together a special event held at Universal Connections in the town.

The physical activity game took place over six weeks in September and October and saw 11,802 people walking, cycling and rolling for points and prizes.

Players together totalled 151,588 active travel miles, which meant that organisers also donated £500 to Kilbryde Hospice.

Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives by rewarding teams with points and prizes the further they travel.

The game was played in 2020 when it had to be ended early, but returned this year when beeping and flashing sensors called Beat Boxes were placed around the town with participants invited to score points on journeys between them.

Among the winners who attended were East Kilbride Cricket Club Juniors who came top of the community total points leader board and second on the community average points leader board.

Other winners included Crosshouse Primary, who came out on top in the schools' total points leader board, while Long Calderwood Primary topped the average points leader board.

Chairman of the council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor Robert Brown, said: “The residents of East Kilbride are becoming seasoned Beat the Street players and thanks to the game, there are noticeably more people out and about walking, cycling and scooting.

As well as improved physical health, there have been other benefits to the town such as more active travel when people are commuting or travelling to school.

“Congratulations to all of the winners, including our nominated charity Kilbryde Hospice, but everyone who took part and got more active as a result is a winner.”

Beat the Street East Kilbride was delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council with support from South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places and the Scottish Government.

Participants will soon receive a survey to measure the impact of the game.
