Winners of Beat the Street activity game given their prizes

The winners of the recent Beat the Street Renfrewshire game have officially been presented with their prizes.

The physical activity game took place over six weeks in September to October - with more than 6,300 people taking part and walking, cycling and wheeling as far as possible.

Together, the community clocked up an incredible 53,100 active travel miles.

Beeping and flashing sensors called Beat Boxes were placed around the towns and villages of Bridge of Weir, Elderslie, Houston, Howwood, Kilbarchan, Linwood, Johnstone and Lochwinnoch with participants invited to score points on journeys between them.

Among the winners who took part were Active Communities, who topped the community and workplace leaderboards for total and average points, plus the Southend Smoothies who came third.

And as a result of the community's achievement, charity partner MND Scotland was presented with a cheque for £500.

Maia Glackin, local engagement coordinator for Beat the Street presented vouchers and trophies to the winners.

She said: “The Beat the Street game really showed the best of Renfrewshire and brought together the whole community.

"Residents, partners and stakeholders from groups and organisations around the towns came together to encourage people to get active and to encourage the community to adopt healthy lifestyle habits.”

Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives by rewarding teams with points and prizes the further they travel.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “It’s been so much fun to see our communities playing the game with their friends and families, especially as getting outdoors and exercising together.

“Congratulations to all of the winners, including our nominated charity MND Scotland, but everyone who took part and got more active as a result is a winner.

Beat the Street Renfrewshire was commissioned by Renfrewshire Council in partnership with Renfrewshire Leisure and funded by the Scottish Government’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme, administered by Paths for All. It was delivered by Intelligent Health.
