Wink Martindale a name to watch in Giants’ head coaching search

The New York Giants have not yet hired their next general manager, but that hasn’t stopped rumors and reports about their upcoming head coaching search from spreading like wildfire.

Names like Brian Flores and Brian Daboll have been the most prevalent, but others have also filtered through. One such name is that of Don “Wink” Martindale.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports that Martindale is a name to watch, especially if the Giants end up hiring Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz as their GM.

One other name that has come up, according to a source, is Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale. He apparently had a strong interview with the Giants two years ago, and he could be a top choice if the Giants hire Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz as their new GM.

The Giants did interview Martindale prior to hiring Joe Judge in 2018, and the Ravens defensive coordinator was not shy about expressing his disappointment in being passed over.

“Am I disappointed? Sure,” Martindale told reporters at the time. “But I feel I’m playing with house money.”

Everything circles back around, it seems.

Martindale began his NFL coaching career with the Oakland Raiders in 2004 as the linebackers coach. He held that role until 2008 when he joined the Denver Broncos’ staff, holding the same role for them during the 2009 season.

Wink became the defensive coordinator for the Broncos in 2010 and then he joined the Ravens in 2012 as the linebackers coach. He held that role through the 2017 season until he was promoted to defensive coordinator beginning in 2018.

Martindale was also a part of the Ravens’ coaching staff that won Super Bowl XLVII.
