Winger a 'consideration' as Nottingham Forest transfer decision to be made

Anthony Knockaert’s Nottingham Forest loan deal expires this week, with his future still uncertain.

The Fulham winger played his final game of his current contract with the Reds on Saturday, helping them to a 1-0 win at Preston North End.

His spell at the City Ground is due to come to an end on Thursday, leaving a decision to be made about what happens next.

Forest have an option to buy the 29-year-old, while they could also try to negotiate keeping him on loan until the summer and reassess further down the line.

The 90 minutes he played at Deepdale was Knockaert’s 16th appearance in the Garibaldi, with his only goal coming in the 2-1 defeat at Norwich City last month.

He has shown flashes of his undoubted ability during his time Trentside and has improved as the season has gone on, albeit without quite making the impact the Reds would have hoped for.

Boss Chris Hughton will look to address his side’s lack of attacking threat in the January transfer window, with the Reds having struggled both to create chances and score goals.

There will not be major changes to the squad, and certainly nothing like the number of additions which came through the doors in the summer - with the priority to oversee some departures.

But the manager says Knockaert is a “consideration”, and the player has previously stated he is keen to extend his stay Trentside if possible.

Asked if there was an update on the Fulham loanee’s situation after the weekend’s victory, Hughton told the BBC: "No, not at this moment. But we are very aware of that one.

"We will certainly be taking that into consideration, but at the moment there is no update.”

He added: "In the period of time he has been here, he has got better and better.

"He came to us having not played for a while, and having been in and out of the Fulham team last season.”

Knockaert said last month: “I feel really good here and if I can stay until the end of the season, I will do.

“I’ve got people working for me at the moment, and the clubs will tell me what’s best for me to do.

“I don’t know what will happen, we will wait to see.”
