
Thousands of white-fronted geese fly over a pond in Miyajimanuma wetland in Bibai, Hokkaido. The wetland is a stopping point on the birds' annual migration from their breeding grounds in Russia's Far East to Izunuma pond in Miyagi Prefecture, where they pass the winter, according to the Miyajima Waterbird Wetland Center. The number of geese peaked at about 58,000 on Sept. 30, before decreasing to about 34,000 on Oct. 8. Most will have left the wetland by the end of this month.
