Windsurfer rescued from dangerous winds and high tide

A windsurfer was rescued by a lifeboat after they were caught up in dangerous winds and tides.

A member of the public called in the incident at 11.45am in West Kirby, just 30 minutes before today's 9.5m tides came in.

The volunteer crew of West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat managed to get to the windsurfer with the help of the person who reported the incident.

Initially, there were reports of two windsurfers struggling due to the sea and wind conditions.

Winds reached 30mph winds at the time, with one of the highest tides of the year.

The other windsurfer managed to return to shore unaided, with the second being transferred into the care of the awaiting local HM coastguard team.

The windsurfer rescued from the sea said: “I’ve never been so happy to see a lifeboat in my life. I was worn out with a sore leg and shoulders. Thank you.”

Ed Rowland, West Kirby RNLI Deputy Launch Authority said: ‘We would like to thank the member of the public for phoning 999 and informing the Coastguard of the situation. Even the most well-prepared and experienced individuals can get into trouble.

"The sea can be hugely unpredictable and with the high wind conditions even more so.”
