Winds 'in excess of 90mph' set to batter Scotland as forecasters issue 'danger to life' warnings

Winds in excess of 90mph are expected to batter Scotland over the coming days, forecasters have warned.

Experts at the Met Office have issued two ‘danger to life’ weather warnings for gale force winds across the north and west of Scotland.

The first of the warnings will come into force from 9pm on Sunday, and will impact the Highlands, Western Isles and Argyll and Bute.

Overnight wind gusts are expected to pick up at 80 to 85mph, with some areas potentially seeing them exceed 90mph.

The Met Office has warned the winds could lead to damaged buildings and injuries from flying debris and large waves.

Adverse conditions could lead to power cuts and public transport services are expected to be heavily impacted.

The yellow warning will remain in place until 6am on Monday.

A notice on the Met Office website reads: “Strong winds are possible during Sunday evening and overnight, before easing quickly during Monday morning.

“There is potential for wind gusts to reach 80 to 85mph, and in excess of 90mph in a few locations, particularly over the Western Isles.

“The strongest gusts will be from a westerly or southwesterly direction. However, the very strongest winds may remain just offshore.”

A similar yellow warning for wind has also been issued for the Orkney and Shetland islands from midnight to midday on Monday.

It comes after large areas of Scotland were battered by storms Arwen and Barra in recent weeks.

Thousands of Scots were left without power for several days while a number of transport routes were closed off after debris was found strewn on roads and rail lines during the worst of Storm Arwen conditions last month.

The next storm name on the Met Office’s list, Corrie, has not yet been named by forecasters.
