Windrush insult as scandal victim told he's 'not British' offered £250 compensation

A Windrush scandal victim threatened with deportation after being told he was “not British” was offered £250 compensation.

Herman Campbell, 55, received the “insulting” offer after being barred from returning home after a holiday in Turkey.

Speaking after Monday’s national Windrush Day – which celebrates the arrival of the first Caribbean migrants in the UK in 1948 – Herman said: “I don’t feel black lives do matter.”

His outrage comes after a 130,000-signature petition was handed in at Downing Street, calling for action over failings that led to the 2018 scandal in which people were wrongly detained, deported and lost rights.

Dad-of-three Herman – who arrived in Britain from Jamaica aged seven – was stopped from flying home without a British passport in 2017.

He turned to the British Consulate for help, but it threatened to deport him unless he could provide proof of his life in the UK.

After a “sleepless” week, Herman finally got access to documents showing he had an indefinite leave to remain stamp in a childhood passport.

Herman, of South London, said: “The shock and distress when they told me I wasn’t British… the psychological impact still affects me today.

"It never goes, the feeling of not belonging, and most of all, the humiliation and embarrassment.”

The Home Office said governments had mistreated the Windrush generation and it had paid out £640,000 so far.

A spokesman said: “The Home Secretary has been clear that the mistreatment of the Windrush generation by successive governments was completely unacceptable and she will right those wrongs.

“The Windrush Compensation Scheme made the first payment within four months of opening and has offered claimants over £640,000 in the first year. In the case of Mr Campbell, we are working with his representatives to review and resolve his claim.”
