Windows smashed by 'big metal balls' flying through air

A woman was 'absolutely livid' to find her car windscreen smashed by a 'big metal ball' that narrowly missed her dad's head

Kirsty Greer, 24, told the ECHO : "I was doing a wash in the kitchen, and my mum runs in screaming 'Your car! Your car! Someone's shot your car'."

The student nurse ran outside and saw a dent on her windscreen with two cracks around the spot where the ball hit her car.

On the ground next to her car, she found a '20 millimetre sized ball bearing'.

Alerted by the sound of a 'shot', neighbours came out and joined Kirsty investigating what happened around 10pm on Tuesday, September 21.

They found more metal balls scattered around cars on Newdales Close on Beechwood Estate, Birkenhead.

Kirsty said one neighbour has had 15 metal balls smash their windows and dent their car in recent weeks.

The student nurse reported the incident to the police straight away.

She told the ECHO : "We're right next to a school playground. What sick individual thinks that's acceptable?"

Kirsty added: "It does my head in. More so because, yeah, a car window is replaceable, but if this has been going on for weeks, and if it hadn't hit my car last night, at what point would it have hit someone?

"That's what I'm more annoyed about - the audacity. Because if they are thinking about the consequences, they've obviously not got any brain cells.

"And if they're not thinking about the consequences, they've still not got any brain cells.

"I've got nieces and stuff. My brother is always out the back with my five and three-year-old nieces on the bikes.

"Imagine something like that happened to them."

Fortunately no one was injured, and Kirsty's insurance will cover the cost of repair, but she said she has to pay an excess of £100.

The dent in her car also hit her paycheque as she was unable to go to work while her car sits out of service until Monday when her window is fixed.

Police are carrying out enquiries in relation to the incident.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "We were called at 10.05pm last night, Tuesday 21st September, following reports damage had been caused to the windscreen of an Audi car on Newdales Close in Wirral.

"It is believed the damage was caused by a metal ball.

"Nobody was injured and enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting log 1077 of 21st September."
