Window shatters in Dundee street spilling glass onto street as cops called

A plate glass window tumbled from the front of a derelict Dundee furniture shop and smashed in the street.

The glass sheet fell from the facade of the Robertson's furniture shop in the city centre's Barrack Street on Tuesday evening.

Thankfully, no-one was injured by the falling glass, which police say seems to have fallen of its own accord.

Video captured by passing local Ryan Carter shows police officers surveying the scene, and workers sweeping up the shards.

Police Scotland has investigated the incident and established no criminality.

A spokesperson said: "A pane of glass had fallen from the building. There was no criminality or vandalism."

Robertson's has been the subject of several redevelopment proposals since closing in 2011 (Scarlett Land and Development)

The incident is likely to prompt calls for faster action on the rejuvenation of the Robertson's furniture store, which closed in 2011.

As a B-listed building, the facade - which dates from the 1930s - cannot be demolished without proper permission from Historic Environment Scotland.

The Art Deco multi-storey has been the subject of several planning applications, the most recent of which proposed converting building into a hotel.

However, the shop was put on the market in the summer without any development taking place. It is currently under offer.

Agents Scarlett Land and Development have suggested that it could be turned into student flats to serve the city's universities.

Will Scarlett, director of the firm, said at the time: “This is a superb opportunity for an exceptional development in Dundee city centre which is very well connected.

“Clearly given strong demand for student accommodation and given its location in close proximity to universities and colleges, this is an ideal opportunity for a student housing developer to progress such a scheme.”
