Win one of 10 hedgehog homes

Autumn is an atmospheric season for humans – but it’s a challenging time for hedgehogs. Lawn mowing, bonfires and the threat from foxes and domestic pets can be hazardous for them and other small mammals.

If you don’t know much about hedgehogs beyond their tell-tale spikes, you might be surprised to learn that they are great for gardens: they eat slugs and snails and other plant-damaging pests. Nocturnal animals, they are common in cities as well as rural locations and will often nest in long grass or piles of leaves.

Because they are such a seldom-seen animal, hedgehogs can be injured when you’re doing the gardening: always check long grass before strimming and bonfires before lighting. Slug pellets can also harm them – if you encourage hedgehogs to use your garden, they will eat the slugs so you won’t need to buy pellets.

The biggest single threat to UK hedgehogs is loss of habitat. As they start to hibernate, between November and early April, they need a safe haven. If you want to encourage hedgehogs to your garden, installing a purpose-built shelter is a good option as there is less chance that you will accidentally harm or disturb your little lodger.

The new, wicker Igloo House from the Woodland Trust offers hedgehogs a retreat and is much safer than a compost heap or pile of leaves. To keep its inhabitants safe, the igloo has a small entrance tunnel, designed to deter predators such as badgers and dogs, and its spacious design can accommodate family groups, such as a mother and her hoglets.

The round painted steel frame has a waterproofed roof with a brushwood finish and is decorated with withy bands so it blends into the environment. Made from natural materials, the appearance varies due to seasonal availability and environmental factors.

The Igloo is designed to provide shelter for wildlife year-round, as well as providing somewhere for hedgehogs to hibernate for years to come.

If you’d like to encourage local hedgehogs to seek sanctuary in your garden, you could win one of 10 Woodland Trust hedgehog igloos. Simply enter your details below for a chance to win.
