Win for students as uni agrees to forum on changes

THE University of Newcastle will host a series of forums starting on Friday to hear students' concerns about the institution's restructure.

As previously reported, University of Newcastle Students' Association president Luka Harrison said there was "a lot of anger" among students about academic staff facing job losses and the lack of adequate consultation, plus concerns about potential impact on studies.

He called for forums for students to voice concerns and give feedback.

Mr Harrison said following meetings between the two organisations, UON planned to host five "student consultation" forums.

He said Vice Chancellor Alex Zelinsky and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mark Hoffman will answer questions at Friday's forum, which will also be streamed online.

He said three forums for the three colleges were planned for next week and would be followed by another general forum.

Mr Harrison said UON had said "we still have time to make changes" to the proposals in the restructure.

"The purpose is for the university to hear the concerns of students on the restructure," he said.

"We were quite strong on that in the meeting, that we didn't want it to be about lecturing students on the changes and that it would be an actual opportunity for students to ask questions and voice their concerns, so we're hoping that's the way it's going to work," he said.

"I think it's definitely a positive step. Obviously we would have preferred it to happen earlier in the piece, but the talks we've had with the uni have been pretty positive in that they want to increase the consultation they're doing with students on these sorts of things."

He said students "can only hope" for genuine consultation.

"It's quite late on and the uni has assured us there's still opportunity to affect change in this process."
