Need some sun? The United Arab Emirates has it by the bucket and spade load, with temperatures an average of 24 degrees even in January and well over 200 hours of sunshine every month.
This is a place where life really is a beach: especially in Ras Al Khaimah, a stunningly situated resort on the very tip of the country, bordering Oman’s Musandam Peninsula. Here you can truly relax, spending your days on the pristine sands, heading seaward on a yacht or ascending into the sky with some parasailing. If you need an escape from the heat, there’s the Iceland Waterpark with its thrilling waterslides, while trips into the desert nearby offer camel safaris, dune bashing and Bedouin feasts. For something a little different, you can take a stroll through the verdant Saqr Park or explore Emirati history at Dhayah Fort, built here on a mountaintop in the 16th century to defend the Gulf from British troops. There’s excellent fly-fishing nearby too, not to mention archery, tennis, bowling and some of the best golf in the Middle East.
Sound like the perfect holiday? Then this is the competition for you. The Guardian has teamed up with Hilton to offer one lucky reader the chance to win their time in the sun in Ras Al Khaimah. The winner will be jetting off to Dubai, just over an hour away from Ras Al Khaimah, for a five-night stay at Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa. Here everything is slowed to a leisurely pace – and there’s a whopping 1.5km stretch of private white sandy beach to enjoy.
Spend your days here, relaxing on some of the cleanest, brightest sands you’ll ever see, or taking a refreshing dip in one of the seven swimming pools. There’s sailing and waterskiing at the watersports centre or for something truly indulgent, an on-site spa with two Turkish hammams and nine treatment rooms offering everything from blissful massages to rejuvenating facials. By night there’s no need to leave, with Passage to Asia serving up Asian cuisine and Paceri da Gustare offering a la carte Italian classics and an extensive selection of fine wines. You can even treat yourself to an after-dinner cognac in the classy X.O. where expertly mixed cocktails and vintage ports are also served.
