Wimpy looks to make a West Yorkshire comeback to show famous burger brand is alive and well

Burger chain Wimpy looks set to make a West Yorkshire comeback as its parent company looks to show the famous brand is alive and well.

The company's Huddersfield branch closed last October, shocking the West Yorkshire town.

But now ExaminerLive is reporting that three recruitment posters have appeared in the window of the Cloth Hall Street venue. And Wimpy says it is hopeful the branch will soon reopen.

Wimpy was founded in the 1950s and grew into one of Britain's best-loved restaurants chains, with hundreds of restaurants across the UK and overseas.

But the chain was later hit hard by competition from American rivals, and many Wimpies disappeared after the chain was taken over by Burger King.

Today Wimpy - owned by South African company Famous Brands - has more than 60 UK restaurants.

Its heartland today is Essex and the south of England and its HQ is in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. There is one more Yorkshire restaurant - in Rotherham.

A spokesperson for Wimpy told ExaminerLive : "No firm plans are currently in place but discussions are ongoing and we hope it won’t be too long before the much loved Wimpy name returns to Huddersfield."
