Dhamne moved into the second round of the Wimbledon boys singles event with a comprehensive win over Aussie Hayden Jones.
Dhamne, who trains at the Piatti Tennis Centre in northwest Italy, came through the qualifiers, where he dropped a set. On Sunday, he wrapped it quickly, sealing a 6-2, 6-4 win.
The 15-year-old took his time finding his feet in the first round engagement. The Australian was at full pace from the word go, and early in the opening set appeared to have the upper hand. In the fifth game, just after Dhamne, from Satara in Maharashtra, had pulled himself out of trouble, the 6 ft 2' teen, who was opening up his shoulders and striking the ball freely, grabbed the advantage with a forehand winner.
Jones double-faulted on the second break-point.
Jones called for the trainer and left the court at 2-5 to receive medical attention. When he returned, his right hamstring taped, Dhamne pressed the accelerator. The Indian broke early in the second set and stayed ahead to make the second-round after 73 minutes of action.
Dhamne plays Briton Henry Searle next. Bhambri-Myneni bow out Meanwhile in the men's doubles, alternates Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni put up a spirited show against Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and France's Adrian Mannarino in the first round. The all-Indian combine came back strongly after losing the opening set. Bhambri and Myneni went down 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.
In the mixed-doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski, the sixth seeds, went down 7-6 (5), 3-6, 4-6 to Croat Ivan Dodig and Taipei's Latisha Chan. The Indo-Canadian pair took the opening set just before the skies opened up late on Saturday. Dodig and Chan cleaned up well on Sunday.
