Wimbledon looks set to be cancelled due to coronavirus crisis with postponement an unrealistic option

Wimbledon looks set to be cancelled for the first time since 1945 when the All England Club hold an emergency meeting next week.

The fate of this year’s Championships rests in the hands of the AELTC board, which includes four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Tim Henman.

Officials have already ruled out playing behind closed doors and, while a possible postponement will be discussed, it is not really a viable option with such a short window in which to play the tournament.

Unlike the French Open, the grass surface means the tournament cannot viably move to a September date.

AELTC chief executive Richard Lewis said: “The unprecedented challenge presented by Covid-19 continues to affect our way of life in ways that we could not have imagined and our thoughts are with all those affected.

“The most important consideration is public health and we are determined to act responsibly in our decisions.

“We are working hard to bring certainty to our plans for 2020 and have convened an emergency meeting for next week, at which a decision will be made.”
