Wimbledon hopeful backed by adoring gran who makes tea when he plays badly

The gran who raised British tennis hopeful Paul Jubb will be cheering him on as he steps out at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, from a Hull council estate, will take on Joao Sousa from Portugal on Tuesday afternoon, having been granted a wildcard by SW19 chiefs.

His gran Valerie, who brought him up after his parents tragically died, will travel from East Yorkshire to watch from the stands.

When asked how the 77-year-old will feel when she sees him walk out, Paul said: “I would imagine she will be very proud.

"It’s really nice. I am happy she can see me play at Wimbledon.”

He added: “She’s just been a huge rock in my life.”

The amateur, who has a tennis scholarship in the US, lost his army father Shaun when he was one and his mum Jacinta died in 2008.

how she makes sure Paul’s high standards do not drop during a match – by disappearing if he is playing badly.

She added: “I’m his biggest critic when he’s playing. I can be rotten.

“I will mutter to myself, ‘What was he trying to do there?’ and, ‘That was a bad shot.’

“If I think he’s playing badly I’ll take myself off and go to the shops or get a cup of tea. He looks up and can see I’ve gone.

“But often when I get back he’s winning. He doesn’t often lose.

“This is a dream come true. I can’t describe how proud I am. He’s a lovely lad.”

Wimbledon chief exec Richard Lewis said: “He’s got a great temperament and he fully deserves this opportunity.”

As the gates opened today, there were many famous faces in the crowd, including McFly’s Dougie Poynter and model girlfriend Maddy Elmer.

British number one Kyle Edmund won in straight sets last night but the BBC bumped him off to show live coverage of the American derby between 15-year-old Cori Gauff and Venus Williams, 39, which saw the teen beat her idol.

Andy Murray is due to make a return to SW19 on Wednesday in the doubles following successful hip surgery.

This year umpires will scrap the “Miss” and “Mrs” titles for female players and will just use their surnames as they do for men.
