Wimbledon expansion moves a step closer after court ruling

  • A High Court judge has ruled that the All England Lawn Tennis Club's (AELTC) plans to expand the Wimbledon site are not subject to land-use restrictions.
  • The ruling stated that the land, formerly the Wimbledon Park Golf Club, was "unencumbered by any statutory trust" as it was never used for public recreation.
  • This decision significantly boosts AELTC's proposal to nearly triple the site's size, including building 38 new courts and an 8,000-seat stadium.
  • The expansion aims to allow the qualifying tournament for the Grand Slam to be held on-site, aligning Wimbledon with other major tennis events.
  • The campaign group Save Wimbledon Park (SWP), which argued against the development, intends to challenge the High Court's ruling at the Court of Appeal.
