Veteran singer Cliff Richard was also seen making an appearance as the tennis action got underway.

The 81-year-old Summer Holiday singer was back at Wimbledon for the second day running.

Keen tennis fan Kate is usually spotted at Wimbledon, but the Duchess of Cambridge has yet to make an appearance at the tournament so far this year.

It comes as US tennis ace Serena Williams was knocked out of the competition in the first round after a shock defeat to France's Harmony Tan.

Tan is currently ranked 115th in the world and has never won a Grand Slam title.

Her match with Williams was the first time she had ever competed at Wimbledon.

The shock knockout has led to some tennis fans to call on the 23-time Grand Slam champion to retire.

The match was Williams' first singles game in over a year, having been forced to withdraw from last year's Wimbledon due to an ankle injury.

When asked about her future following the defeat, Williams remained tight-lipped. "I'm just planning for right now, seeing how I feel, just to go from there," she said.

Pressed on whether it will be her last appearance at Wimbledon, she added: "That's a question I can't answer. I don't know. Who knows? Who knows where I'll pop up. There's definitely lots of motivation to play better and at home [the US Open]."
