Four people have been rushed to hospital after a “chemical incident” at a bank in south-west London.

Emergency services were called at about 12.30pm today after a “smell of chemicals” was reported in the building close to Wimbledon station.

Photos posted on social media show police cars, fire engines and ambulances in Wimbledon Hill Road and Alexandra Road, where branches of Barclays and HSBC are located.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Twelve members of staff left the building before the brigade arrived.

“They were all assessed at the scene and three men and a woman were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

“Firefighters carried out a sweep of the property but found no elevated readings.

"The cause of the incident is believed to be fumigation of the building which had taken place overnight.”

The incident was over shortly after 2pm and police have deemed the building safe.
