Wimbledon 2025 LIVE!
World No1 Jannik Sinner returns to the court this afternoon to take on Ben Shelton after shaking off an injury scare which threatened to end his SW19 dream. The Italian, a three-time major winner, is chasing his second major title of the year after he won the Australian Open in January, as he looks to bounce back from his French Open final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz from a few short weeks ago - a titanic clash which could likely be repeated on Centre Court on Sunday.
But Sinner must first get past the American Shelton having survived an almighty scare against Grigor Dimitrov on Monday, in which he was two sets down before his opponent was forced to retire through injury. Sinner himself required a medical timeout during the game after slipping and appearing to injure his right elbow, and underwent an MRI scan on Tuesday before returning to the practice courts this morning.
No10 seed Shelton reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time by coming from behind to beat Lorenzo Sonego in four sets. And in doing so he bettered his father, and coach, Bryan who 31 years ago reached the round of 16 at the grass-court tournament which proved the high-point of his Grand Slam career. GAME, SET AND MATCH SINNER -- Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 6-4 Shelton
17:54 , Dom SmithShelton leads 15-0 when Sinner hits long, but then the 22-year-old does the same and it’s 15-15.
Serving to stay in the match, Shelton gets a touch of fortune when Sinner’s next return of serve lands JUST out ... but the tennis Sinner produces in the following point is just too good, too powerful, and too precise. 30-30.
Shelton nets with an unforced error, and that gives Sinner one match point.
What nerve from Shelton! His first serve is followed by a crashing winner to take the game to deuce!
Advantage Sinner means another match point. It’s saved with a 140mph ace!!!
And when Shelton goes long, Sinner has done it. What a performance from them both, but particularly from the No1 seed. He’s through to the last four!
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 5-4 Shelton
17:46 , Dom SmithShelton fancies a break of serve might be on the cards as Sinner hits into the tramlines to bring up a 0-30 lead for the American.
An ace will do nicely for the world No1 - 15-30 - but Shelton is still ahead for now.
But not for long. An unreturned serve makes it 30-30, and soon Sinner is 40-30 ahead.
Game Sinner. He’s a game away from the semis!
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 4-4 Shelton
17:42 , Dom SmithShelton gets to 30-0 on serve when a Sinner return lands too deep and beyond the baseline.
The American then sizes up a smash but it’s a bluff. What follows is a gorgeous drop shot which Sinner can’t return. 40-0.
40-15.
Game Shelton, with an ace.
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 4-3 Shelton
17:38 , Dom SmithSinner produces a second serve which Shelton cannot get back over the net, and 30-15 is 40-15 when an ace follows it up.
Game Sinner, as Shelton nets on a forehand return.
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 3-3 Shelton
17:34 , Dom SmithThe first point is taken with a volley winner from Sinner as Shelton slips. Sinner checks his opponent is OK, and fortunately he is.
And soon enough he’s levelling at 15-15 with a blistering ace.
Sinner then nets and it’s 30-15.
Shelton serves out the game and roars “COME ON”, which the crowd here on Court No1 absolutely loved.
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 3-2 Shelton

Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 2-1 Shelton

17:20 , Dom SmithStrong serving from Shelton gets him back on terms at 1-1 in a set he simply has to win.
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 1-0 Shelton
17:19 , Dom SmithSinner is playing some super stuff right now and thumps a high ball down into the court and away from a watching-on Shelton with a volley winner to claim the first game of the third set. If he goes on to win this set, he’s through to the semis in straights!
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 6-4 Shelton
17:14 , Dom SmithIs anyone going to break anyone’s serve in this match?!
Shelton races into a 30-0 lead but then the crowd cheer what they think is another ace a little prematurely. Well, very prematurely. Sinner gets the ball back over and wins the point. And then next after a long rally!
BUT Sinner is on hand to win the crucial points and DOES take the first break of the match! And with it, the second set!
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 5-4 Shelton
17:09 , Dom SmithSinner is not remotely close to being broken in this game, comfortably holding to move himself a game away from taking the second set. The small matter of breaking Shelton now...
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 4-4 Shelton
17:06 , Dom SmithDanger for Shelton as he faces a break point at 30-40 on serve. But with real guts, he saves it with a monstrous forehand which Sinner can’t return.

Sinner 7-6(7-2) 4-3 Shelton
17:00 , Dom SmithA glimmer of hopes of a break of serve, perhaps, for Shelton as he gets to 30-30 on the Sinner serve, but he nets with an unforced error at the end of a long rally and shouts at himself after doing so.
Hang on, though. Now Sinner nets and it’s deuce! But after a long deuce, Sinner holds. The chance came and went for Shelton.
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 3-3 Shelton

Sinner 7-6(7-2) 2-2 Shelton
16:45 , Dom SmithSuper shot to start the game off from Shelton, who drop-shots at the net and beyond the reach of Sinner for 15-0. Unreturned serve. 30-0.
He gets it done and we remain on serve.
Sinner 7-6(7-2) 2-1 Shelton

He holds.
GAME AND FIRST SET -- Sinner 7-6(7-2) Shelton
16:27 , Dom SmithAn exceptional point plays out which demonstrates the ability of these two players to get around the court at searing pace. Shelton takes it, earning a mini break for 2-0, but Sinner then hits an unreal forehand winner which at least gets him on the board.
Sinner gets the mini break back and earns one of his own!
It’s 4-2 Sinner at the changeover.
And then 5-2, and suddenly it’s looking tough from here for Shelton.
6-2. 7-2. Seven straight points, and the world No1 takes the opening set. Brutal.
Sinner 6-6 Shelton
16:20 , Dom SmithSinner’s serving is just too good, and he works to 30-0 up, before producing another fine serve which Shelton can return first time round but not the subsequent shot.
He holds, and we head to a first-set tiebreak!
Sinner 5-6 Shelton
16:17 , Dom SmithSinner is beginning to hit some very big shots indeed and after thundering a forehand down the lend he follows to the net and slams down a winner.

Sinner 5-5 Shelton
16:12 , Dom SmithSinner races into a 40-0 lead on serve, showing no signs of being broken or an untimely wobble. And he claims the game at 5-5 with a sensational forehand, battered onto the baseline, with Shelton unable to get near it.
Sinner 4-5 Shelton

Sinner 3-3 Shelton
15:56 , Dom SmithSinner forces Shelton to hit a poor forehand into the net, and that brings up 40-0 Sinner on his serve.

And just as I say that he hits an ace for 30-30 - cool as you like.
Game.

Game.

This could be a very tight match, I feel.
Sinner 0-1 Shelton
15:38 , Dom SmithShelton gets himself to 40-30 up on his first service game, and serving is a major strength for the 22-year-old American.
