Emma Raducanu vs Mimi Xu - LIVE!
Emma Raducanu will be hoping history repeats itself after she beat Mimi Xu to reach the second round at Wimbledon. The 22-year-old was handed an intriguing opening match against fellow Briton Xu, who received a wildcard to make her Grand Slam debut.
Raducanu broke in the first game of the match and from there the result never looked in serious doubt, as she eased to a 6-3 6-3 win over the 17-year-old. The British number one will now face 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and that should bring back happy memories for Raducanu.
She beat Vondrousova in the second round at SW19 in 2021 as she stormed to the fourth round as an 18-year-old, before weeks later enjoying her stunning run to the title at the US Open. There is no expectation of something similar happening again four years later but this was a confident start to her Wimbledon campaign from Raducanu, with no signs of the back issues that have caused problems in the build-up to this tournament.

Raducanu 6-3 6-3 Xu
18:54 , Matt VerriWatch out... 0-30! Xu not done yet.
Bu it’s a good couple of points from Raducanu, who can watch Xu’s lob land long. Again she’s two points away.
Match point brought up, as Xu nets the forehand.
Game, set and match! Raducanu eases through to the second round.
Raducanu 6-3 *5-3 Xu
18:51 , Matt VerriXu gets the better of the baseline exchange... but that can only watch as the net cord drops perfectly for Raducanu. 30-30.
Really good effort from the teenager to battle to a hold and at least ask the question of whether Raducanu can serve it out.
Raducanu 6-3 5-2* Xu
18:46 , Matt VerriNormal service resumed. Raducanu puts away the smash, 30-0 and this is looking much more comfortable.
Another brilliant forehand winner, this time crosscourt. Raducanu back in complete control.
Goes for too much with that one, flies long. And so does that one. 40-30.
But Raducanu holds and she is now just a game away from the second round.
Raducanu 6-3 *4-2 Xu
18:43 , Matt VerriPetchey back on his feet in Raducanu’s box, as her slice stays low and Xu can’t get it back. 0-30.

Shot! Forehand down the line from Raducanu, Xu barely moves. Breaks to love.
Can Raducanu consolidate it this time?
Raducanu 6-3 3-2* Xu
18:39 , Matt VerriRaducanu has been so impressive on serve for most of this match, but she’s starting to give Xu some chances.
Double fault and it’s 30-30... and it’s now break point again! Raducanu’s slice floats wide.
Raducanu saves it, confidently up to the net to put away the volley. Deuce.
Another double fault, another break point for Xu. She can’t take this one either, forehand netted.
Take three! Big winner crosscourt and Xu will have yet another chance.
And Xu does break back! Raducanu unable to pull away in this set.
Raducanu 6-3 *3-1 Xu
18:32 , Matt VerriRaducanu aggressive as she looks for an immediate response. Deep return and then puts away the forehand, 15-30.
And now a massive roar from Raducanu as she brings up a break point.
A second one swiftly follows, as Xu nets the forehand and Raducanu moves a break up again.
Raducanu 6-3 2-1* Xu
18:27 , Matt VerriMore serene progress for Raducanu on serve. Two first serves don’t come back and it’s 30-0.
Ace down the T, 40-0. Ruthless. Nearly a perfect game, but the fault call denies her another ace.
She’s then scrambling around the court to stay in the point, defensive lob lands just long. Xu with a bit of hope at 40-30.
Bit more hope - deuce. Within touching distance of a first break point.
Here we go, forehand winner and Xu does have a break point!
And she takes it! Waves her racket to the crowd - back on serve in this second set.
Raducanu 6-3 *2-0 Xu
18:22 , Matt VerriAnother break point coming up, Raducanu confident with the smash.
But once more Xu denies her, 114mph ace. Grinding away in her opening service game in the set.
Xu bring up a game point - but Raducanu then slaps a forehand winner down the line. Back to deuce.
Break point for Raducanu, surely this pressure is going to tell?
Yep. Return is too good and there is the break.
Raducanu 6-3 1-0* Xu
18:19 , Matt VerriToo good. Great depth on the groundstrokes from Raducanu and the backhand lands just in.
Double fault from Xu - immediate problems at 0-30.
The teenager is then left in a heap at the net as she loses her balance when sending a volley long. Three break points - crowd trying to get behind Xu.
She saves one, putting away the overhead at the net, and Raducanu then nets her return. 30-40.
Xu saves all three, Raducanu misfiring with the backhand. Big effort from Xu. Deuce.
And again. And again. Double fault takes us to a third deuce.
Raducanu 6-3 1-0* Xu
18:12 , Matt VerriRaducanu now 15/15 behind her first serve... make that 16/16. Rock solid from the British No1.
Has to rely on the second serve next point, but the return is dumped into the net by Xu.
Hold to love for Raducanu.
Slight difference in approaches from the two.
Xu has gone off court at the end of that set, Raducanu is standing in the end of the court covered in bright sunshine and sending down some serves.
Raducanu 6-3 Xu
18:06 , Matt VerriXu with the unforced error and at 15-30, she’s two points away from losing this set.
That helps. 116mph ace out wide. 30-30. But she follows it with another mistake - set point for Raducanu.
Taken! Xu’s flat forehand lands wide and Raducanu takes the opener in 37 minutes.
Raducanu 5-3* Xu
18:02 , Matt VerriXu has a chance with the backhand pass to get to 0-30, but can’t make it as Raducanu moves to the net.
Teenager then goes big with the return, lands a couple of inches beyond the baseline. Nearly perfect.
Pressure point at 30-30 - Raducanu’s serve gets her out of trouble. Mark Petchey on his feet in her box.
And he’s up again as Xu’s forehand flies long. Too hot for all that moving around to be honest.
Raducanu *4-3 Xu
17:58 , Matt VerriXu looking much more assured now on serve.
Another winner from the baseline, followed by a swinging ace out wide.
First serve good enough again next point and she holds to love in no time at all.
Raducanu 4-2* Xu
17:55 , Matt VerriCouple of loose shots into the net from Xu, Raducanu races into a 40-0 lead on serve.
She hasn’t lost a point on serve yet... until Xu finds a clean forehand winner to end that particular run.
Raducanu won’t be too disappointed with 12 out of 13, though, as Xu slices a second-serve return into the net.
Raducanu *3-2 Xu
17:51 , Matt VerriGreat shot, Xu hammers a forehand winner crosscourt.
Is this going to be a first routine hold of the match for the 17-year-old?
Yep. Raducanu whips a forehand wide and Xu holds to 15.
Raducanu 3-1* Xu
17:47 , Matt VerriSecond serve from Raducanu sits up... and Xu takes a big swing at thin air. We’ll say it took a dodgy bounce.
Xu then sends an unforced error sailing long, Raducanu 40-0 up in a hurry.
And it’s a swift hold to love, as Xu slips behind the baseline. She’s back up and looks to be fine.
Raducanu *2-1 Xu
17:43 , Matt VerriFeels important for Xu that she breaks here, or this set could get away from her in a hurry. Raducanu has won nine of the first ten points in this match.
Better from Xu, who comes to the net and wins the point, despite having to scramble back after a great Raducanu lob. 30-15.
She’s got more problems here though - forehand from Raducanu forces the error and she has a break point.
Xu saves it! First serve turns up at an ideal time and she puts away the forehand. Deuce.
Pressure back on, Xu nets a routine forehand and it’s another break point, but again it’s saved. Xu wins the slice battle.
Big hold! Xu is on the board.
Raducanu 2-0* Xu
17:34Raducanu celebrating every point she wins with a shout and fist pump at her box.
Four of them in a hurry in that game, Xu hasn’t been able to really get going yet.
Hold to love and an ideal start for Raducanu.
Raducanu *1-0 Xu
17:31 , Matt VerriBit of a nervy start from Xu, double fault and she’s immediately under pressure at 0-30.
Follows that with a loose forehand and Raducanu has three break points in the opening game.
Big ‘come on’ shout from Xu as she wins her first point... even bigger one from Raducanu as she brings up the break. Xu slices low into the net.
Right then, warm-ups done.
Raducanu won the toss and elected to receive. Xu to get us up and running.
Raducanu over for a change of racket within about a minute of the warm-up starting. Good start.
Young girl in front of the press section is holding up a ‘Go Mimi’ sign - will be interesting to see who the Court One crowd get behind here.
Here we go!
17:21 , Matt VerriRaducanu and Xu have walked out into the sunshine.
Xu with big headphones on, staying in her own bubble for now.
Unsurprisingly, a fair few empty seats on the side of Court One with the seats still firmly in the sun. People hiding until the last possible moment...
Earlier today...
17:11 , Matt VerriSonay Kartal got Wimbledon off to a perfect start from a British perspective as she beat 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko.
It was a tough first-round draw for the 23-year-old, against an opponent who beat her a week ago in Eastbourne, but Kartal got her revenge in sweltering conditions on the opening day at SW19.
She rallied from 5-2 down to take the opening set and, after dropping the second, raced through a decider to seal a 7-5 2-6 6-2 victory in just under two hours.
Kartal will face world number 111 Viktoriya Tomova, in the second round, after Ons Jabeur retired from their first-round encounter.
"That was by far one of the toughest matches I've played,” Kartal said.
“I would say that I struggle against the big hitters, so getting that win today after her beating me last week was great.”

Start time confirmed
17:05 , Matt VerriEmma Raducanu and Mimi Xu will stroll out onto Court One at 5:20pm, so you’ve got 15 minutes to get yourselves ready.
It’s till very hot at Wimbledon, no shade on court. Both would rather this didn’t turn into a three-set, three-hour epic...
Difficult draw...
16:57 , Matt VerriTough test in round two for whoever wins this match between the two Brits.
It will be either McCartney Kessler or Marketa Vondrousova.
Kessler just won the title in Nottingham, while Vondrousova lifted the trophy in Berlin... and was Wimbledon champion only two years ago.
Game, set and match!
16:50 , Matt VerriJacob Fearnley was 5-2 up in the tie-break... he’s lost it 7-5.
Joao Fonseca wins in straight sets, really impressive from the Brazilian teenager.
Raducanu and Xu on Court One next!
Strap in!
16:43 , Matt VerriWe’re about to find out just how soon Emma Raducanu and Mimi Xu will be on court.
Jacob Fearnley and Joao Fonseca have just gone to a third set tie-break on No. 1 Court.
If Fonseca wins it, he will be through to the second round and the British women will be out very shortly.

His compatriot Billy Harris followed him, and he is on serve against the big-hitting Serb Dusan Lajovic.
Raducanu v Xu head-to-head
16:23 , Oli GentThis will be the first time that these two have faced off, although they have hit together once before at Roehampton, when Xu was 14, and just weeks after Raducanu had stunned the world by winning the US Open as a qualifier.
Raducanu’s record at the All England Club is 7-3, with her most recent match here ending in shock defeat at the last 16 stage by Lulu Sun 6-2 5-7 6-2.
