Wimbledon 2025 LIVE!
The gates are finally open in SW19 as the grass-court Grand Slam begins under scorching west London sun. As is tradition, Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, opens Centre Court on day one, with Fabio Fognini looking to pull off a first-round shock.
Alcaraz is hoping to win Wimbledon for the third time in a row, having successfully defended his crown against Novak Djokovic last year. Only four players have managed the three-peat - Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Djokovic - in the Open era, and Alcaraz comes to town in superb form. An 18th-straight victory last week secured another Queen's title, which followed up successes in Rome and, memorably, at the French Open.
Alcaraz is right to be confident, having played Fognini twice before, though both on clay, and winning in straight sets on both occasions. Can Fognini spoil the party? It's an action-packed first day at Wimbledon, with 14 British hopes also in action, including Emma Raducanu and Jacob Fearnley.
Follow all the action from Centre Court with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog below, featuring expert insight and analysis from reporter Dom Smith at the All England Club.

GAME, SET AND MATCH ALCARAZ -- Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 1-6 Alcaraz
18:18 , Dom SmithAlcaraz storms into a 30-0 lead but then watches a typically precise Fognini forehand slide pass him, before netting to let up the lead altogether.
Match point arrives when Fognini returns the following first serve too powerfully and it lands beyond the baseline.
Into the net it goes from Fognini. At long, long last, Alcaraz has won.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 1-5 Alcaraz
18:15 , Dom SmithFognini stays in the set and the match by holding serve. Next up, we’ll see whether Alcaraz can get this match finally won at long last on serve...
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 0-5 Alcaraz
18:12 , Dom SmithThe defending champ slams a crosscourt ace from the left that beats Fognini without him touching it. Then an ace down the T for 40-0, and I’m left wondering where all this has been hiding over the past four hours!
Hold to love. Rampant stuff.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 0-4 Alcaraz
18:08 , Dom SmithFognini flies into a 40-0 lead but then gives up two points quite generously to Alcaraz. The Spaniard gets himself all the way back as Fognini hits the net after a drop shot.
Advantage Alcaraz, and then a slip. Deuce again.
Advantage Alcaraz again. Taken. Double break Alcaraz and that should (maybe?), (possibly?) be him on his way.
Here we go then...
18:03 , Dom SmithBack underway
Still waiting
17:57 , Dom SmithWe’re still waiting to get back up and running.
Break in play
17:54 , Dom SmithThere is a brief break in play here while a fan receives some attention. It’s very, very hot and Alcaraz was first to hand over a bottle of water.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 0-3 Alcaraz
17:47 , Dom SmithAlcaraz has really struggled with first serves in this match, and he will know this is something he needs to address.
It leaves him in real trouble at 15-40, but he brings Fognini to the net beautifully. 30-40. Deuce. Advantage. Game.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 0-2 Alcaraz
17:42 , Dom SmithFognini is crusing but lets it slip, allowing Alcaraz back into the game by giving away a deuce break point.
He has Alcaraz running in on the net, but doesn’t enough once there. The Spaniard finds the open court and raises his arms. It’s a first break of the final set. 2-0.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2, 0-1 Alcaraz
17:37 , Dom SmithAlcaraz heads 30-0 up but is then unable to make it over the net as Fognini sends him deep to the court. Fine, fine winner from Alcaraz next, crosscourt.
He can serve out the game to 15 but chooses this inopportune moment for a double fault.
Eventually, he gets there.
INTO A DECIDING SET -- Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 6-2 Alcaraz
17:29 , Dom SmithWe head into a fifth set in a rather incredible match, Alcaraz looking more than a little resigned as he passes the ball powerlessly into the net before going long. It’s a hold to love!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 5-2 Alcaraz
17:25 , Dom SmithA subtle shake of the racket from Alcaraz as he makes his way back from 0-15 down to 30-15 up. There’s a larger clench of the fists when Fognini rattles a forehand beyond the baseline.
But the Italian digs in again and gets himself a break point, searching for a chance to move further ahead. Computer says no. Ace from Alcaraz.
Then Alcaraz approaches the net but Fognini bypasses him with a winner down the line that showed all his experience from 15 years on the tour. And he breaks him again!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 4-2 Alcaraz
17:18 , Dom SmithAlcaraz is hanging in there desperately and after getting a smash volley back over the net, has no chance with the second, leaving him grimacing up at the blue skies above.
Fognini holds, to back up his break.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 3-2 Alcaraz
17:13 , Dom SmithFognini wraps the ball long into the tramlines for 30-15 Alcaraz, but Fognini finds the baseline with real accuracy immediately after.
Then a really fortunate break point arises as the ball skips up off the take and beats Alcaraz down the line.
It seems to stun Alcaraz, who concedes the next point too and is broken!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 2-2 Alcaraz
17:08 , Dom SmithA good hold by Fognini, and one that didn’t take as much arduous effort as he forced Alcaraz to expend in the last game!
2-2 in the fourth.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 1-2 Alcaraz
17:02 , Dom SmithThere seems to be trouble for Alcaraz on every single service game in this match, and there is again as Fognini twists the ball past him for 0-30.
Alcaraz gets the next point - his opponent ending up on the floor - but has to save two break points, which he does, before saving another on deuce.
Another long hard slog of a service game, but Alcaraz gets the desired outcome. In fact, the longest game of the match so far.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 1-1 Alcaraz
16:52 , Dom SmithExcellent line winner from Fognini, who arrows the ball into the corner, past Alcaraz, for 30-0.
It’s a very convincing hold of serve indeed from the Italian, 138th in the world.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5), 5-7, 0-1 Alcaraz
16:49 , Dom SmithAlcaraz shows a deft flick of the wrist with his final touch of the opening game of this fourth set, slipping the ball just over the net for a safe hold.
THIRD SET ALCARAZ -- Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 5-7 Alcaraz
16:44 , Dom SmithFognini’s slice lands wide of the line with the first point of the game, but he finds the baseline with perfection in the second. Fognini goes long for 30-30, and then a set point arrives as Alcaraz dinks cutely over the net.
Fognini defends it superbly, but then another arrives after a double fault. Alcaraz takes it, and the third set too!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 5-6 Alcaraz
16:38 , Dom SmithA very important hold from Alcaraz given the direction of travel and having just lost his break. He heads 6-5 in front and can claim the third set if he can break Fognini next.
But, clearly, it won’t be easy...
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 5-5 Alcaraz
16:35 , Dom SmithAnd from 5-3 down, Fognini is all the way down, a fair summary of what has been a superb performance from him so far.
He hits a storming serve down the T and gets it back, before smashing down the centre of the court for 5-5. On we go in this third set!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 4-5 Alcaraz
16:29 , Dom SmithFognini is courageous to the last and by forcing Alcaraz to net he brings up two break points of his own at 15-40. Both are saved by the two-time Wimbledon champion Alcaraz.
Then comes a point so good from Fognini that it has Stuart Broad and Sir David Beckham clapping in the Royal Box and Fognini’s team in his box jumping up as though Italy have won the World Cup.
And he breaks!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 3-5 Alcaraz
16:24 , Dom SmithA super lob from Alcaraz has Fognini flummoxed and takes the score to 15-15, and it gets better for the defending champions when the Italian plays a double fault.
Then a wild swing from Fognini offers up two break points, and you sense Alcaraz knows he must take one of them.
Not the first; a second-serve ace instead. And not the second; stunning tennis from Fognini, sending Alcaraz sprinting all over the place.
Great crosscourt play from Alcaraz to earn another break point at deuce, and this time he takes it as Fognini mis-hits wide!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 3-4 Alcaraz
16:17 , Dom SmithFognini starts off on the Alcaraz serve with a super line winner for 0-15, but then he clips the net on his next shot, jumping on the turf in frustration.
Fognini does manage to earn a couple of break points, though, only for both to fall by the wayside as a drop shot and ace get the Centre Court crowd off their feet.
A second-serve ace follows, but then a remarkable net winner from Fognini, so good it even has Alcaraz smiling. Then advantage! ...Only for Alcaraz to pull out a stunning winner and return us to deuce. Long game this!
Alcaraz eventually holds, just.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 3-3 Alcaraz
16:09 , Dom SmithThat’s just too good from Fognini. Wow! He sends Alcaraz darting from right to left and then right again, each shot more precise until the Spaniard can no longer get there.
That’s for 30-15, and then Alcaraz can’t make it over the net meaning it’s 40-15.
Game.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 2-3 Alcaraz
16:05 , Dom SmithAlcaraz is into a bit of a groove now and his seventh point on the bounce brings up 40-0, only for Fognini to pick up one point.
But then an extraordinary forehand winner from Alcaraz, curved with culture onto the line where the tramline meets the baseline. It’s a fitting way to edge ahead in the third set: on serve at 3-2.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 2-2 Alcaraz
16:03 , Dom SmithWell then. That was not the way Fognini’s service game looked likely to go just a few minutes ago. The Italian is broken back immediately - to love - as Alcaraz lets the ball bounce and it lands out. A routine break bodes well for the Spaniard...
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 2-1 Alcaraz
15:58 , Dom SmithAt the moment Alcaraz is having to work harder to win his service games than Fognini is, and he is duly broken again! Drop shots just over the net don’t half help, though, and move the Spaniard to 40-30, only for a double fault to bring up deuce, at which point the crowd try loudly to gee him up.
Fognini is just too good, however, and twists a winner into the corner for break point! It’s taken at the first time of asking.
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 1-1 Alcaraz
15:52 , Dom SmithOutstanding line winner from Fognini, a cultured pass onto the line and a shake of the fist to follow from the 38-year-old, who is playing in his 63rd Grand Slam here.
It’s a hold to love from the Italian. What a performance this has been from him so far!
Fognini 5-7, 7-6(7-5) 0-1 Alcaraz
15:49 , Dom SmithAlcaraz serves first in the third set and begins with an ace, but then approaches the net and can’t get the ball over it - a fine example of how he’s been just off the pace so far this afternoon.
A fine ace for 40-15 offers those in Centre Court a reminder of his quality when he does hit his optimal level, as does a cute winner to see out the game.
SECOND SET FOGNINI -- Fognini 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) Alcaraz
15:42 , Dom SmithAlcaraz’s first point after the changeover is an inexplicable miss in which he had all the court to aim at but scrapes the ball too far, into the tramlines. An age from Fognini earns set piece, but it’s not taken.
Smash winner from Alcaraz for 5-6, Fognini claps, showing good sportsmanship. But at fourth set point Alcaraz passes wide and Fognini is level at one set apiece!
Fognini 5-7, 6-6 (4-2) Alcaraz
15:37 , Dom SmithFognini senses he can level the match here and is 2-0 up when Alcaraz goes long (just) and then misses the court once more.
Superb serving from Fognini is to the Italian’s real benefit as he moves 3-1 and 4-1 ahead, only for a lovely Alcaraz drop-shot to make it 4-2 as the players change ends.
TIEBREAK -- Fognini 5-7, 6-6 Alcaraz
15:33 , Dom SmithFognini sends Alcaraz all over the court to bring the game back level at 30-30, not giving the defending champion an inch if he can help it!
But Alcaraz gets a spot of luck as the Italian puts a rash hit into the net, and then what follows is an excellent point of real quality from both players, culminating in a smash winner from Alcaraz. Tiebreak!
Fognini 5-7, 6-5 Alcaraz
15:28 , Dom SmithThis is some performance from Fognini! He’s playing some sensational tennis out there and edges ahead once more at 6-5.
If Alcaraz is going to claim this second set, he’s going to have to hold serve and then do so via a tiebreak. It’s tense stuff on Centre Court!
Fognini 5-7, 5-5 Alcaraz
15:25 , Dom SmithFognini seems to be irritated with something in his swinging technique, regularly shouting up at his box and complaining about something.
Alcaraz heads 40-15 up as Fognini passes a simple shot into the net. It’s a routine hold from there and there’s second-set parity once more at 5-5.
Fognini 5-7, 5-4 Alcaraz
15:20 , Dom SmithIt’s brave, brave tennis from Fognini, whose net game has been very good of late, as he approaches to good effect.
Alcaraz is back into contention at 40-15, though, forcing deuce and forcing Fognini to point to his own head and demand concentration. It works. What an important hold of serve from the Italian.
Fognini 5-7, 4-4 Alcaraz
15:14 , Dom SmithThere’s a very long rally at 30-15 in which both players send the other flying all over the court, left to right and back again. But Fognini nets that point.
The Italian won’t go away just yet and punches the air as he forces deuce. And again at break point. And he takes it!
A break back. 4-4!
Fognini 5-7, 3-4 Alcaraz
15:05 , Dom SmithFognini with a really important hold of serve given he was broken last time out. The Italian jogs off quickly to his seat to regroup, still very much in this second set at 4-3 down. But Alcaraz serves next...
Fognini 5-7, 2-4 Alcaraz
15:02 , Dom SmithAlcaraz is considering volleying back at Fognini but thinks the Italian’s shot might land beyond the baseline so lets it bounce. He’s right, and suddenly it’s 40-0 on serve for Alcaraz. And with a net putaway which Fognini can’t reach, game. A high-level game that from the double defending champion.
Fognini 5-7, 2-3 Alcaraz
14:59 , Dom SmithFabio Fognini is proving a difficult nut to crack on serve, but this was a poor service game and he is broken for the first time in the second set.
A double fault at deuce hands break point to the world No2. Then comes a net shot from Fognini and potentially trouble ahead.
Fognini 5-7, 2-2 Alcaraz
14:54 , Dom SmithAlcaraz produces a really nice disguised drop shot which his opponent cannot read.
But a nice line shot from Fognini forces the error into the net and takes the game to deuce as Fognini eyes a break in the second set and potentially a chance to level this match.
No dice. Alcaraz takes the game with ease from there.
Fognini 5-7, 2-1 Alcaraz
14:48 , Dom SmithA precise bent forehand into the corner makes it 30-0 Fognini, but Alcaraz twists his torso and fires back into the unguarded court for 30-15.
Fognini gets over the line and holds once more.
Fognini 5-7, 1-1 Alcaraz
14:45 , Dom SmithThey say you never lose it. Fognini certainly hasn’t lost it. At 0-30 up on Alcaraz’s serve, he bends a lovely backhand VERY close to the line. Fine margins, but it’s out. And soon enough 30-30 and Alcaraz is back level on serve.
And then a show of real anger from Fognini who swings his racket at the air. He’s livid after netting for 40-30, but just a moment of sheer Alcaraz class, as the Spaniard hits the line to hold.
Fognini 5-7, 1-0 Alcaraz
14:41 , Dom SmithFognini will not simply go away. He’s 38 and potentially playing on Wimbledon Centre Court for a third and final time in his storied career. Sure enough, he’s off to a good start in the second set, 30-0 up on serve.
But Alcaraz has other ideas and brings it back to 30-30, and then deuce.
Fognini forces Alcaraz to the net and then bypasses him to head advantage up. And then a peculiar moment as both players are at the net trying to lob each other. Alcaraz’s is wayward, and Fognini holds.
FIRST SET ALCARAZ -- Fognini 5-7 Alcaraz
14:35 , Dom SmithAlcaraz looks like he finally means business and takes the first set 7-5.
The final game starts off with a beautiful act down the T which flies off the chalk. And it ends in the same way, but this time with a crosscourt serve which flies past Fognini on the outside. Alcaraz is a set up and, you sense, warming up now too.
Fognini 5-6 Alcaraz
14:31 , Dom SmithAlcaraz is a little hasty to get Fognini broken when 0-30 up and hammers into the net to halve that lead.
Then comes a wild swing way past the court’s extremities, which leaves Alcaraz staring at the turf in (self-)disgust.
Yet he forces a miss into the tramlines from the 38-year-old Italian, and then a similar miss from Alcaraz sees him waste break point. Deuce.
A hawkeye call doesn’t go Fognini’s way, bringing up another break point, and Alcaraz takes it with a drop shot followed by a cool lob over Fognini. Real class. A breakthrough at last.
Fognini 5-5 Alcaraz
14:26 , Dom SmithAt 15-15, Fognini goes long with a shot he ought really to have made, and that hands Alcaraz the ascendency in his own service game.
There’s an attempted winner from Fognini that looked mightily close to hitting the line, but it just missed. And we’re at 5-5, now first to seven games in this opening set.
Fognini 5-4 Alcaraz
14:21 , Dom SmithAlcaraz is 30-0 down and then nets for 40-0, with Fognini’s team cheering him on from his box.
It’s a hold to love for the Italian, as Alcaraz strikes into the net again. 5-4. Now, can he pinch this first set with a break?
Fognini 4-4 Alcaraz
14:19 , Dom SmithWe are still on serve on Centre Court, where there is plenty of fanning faces from the crowd, no doubt extremely warm just as I am!
This service game is looking like a routine one at 40-0 Alcaraz, until he approaches the net and can’t get it over. 40-15. Then 40-30.
But he gets it won. 4-4.
Fognini 4-3 Alcaraz
14:14 , Dom SmithA lovely reverse shot from Alcaraz brings him to 30-30, before Fognini nets and brings up the first break point of the match for the defending champion.
And he wastes it, shanking a return into the crowd.
But Fognini nets again at deuce and another arrives from the world No2. And promptly goes...
The Italian holds again, fair play to him!
Fognini 3-3 Alcaraz
14:09 , Dom SmithAlcaraz’s service game is being pushed all the game by Fognini at the moment; it’s impressive stuff from the 38-year-old.
At 0-30 up, though, he nets, and lets out a roar of frustration.
Two break points arrive at 15-40, but both of them come and go. Alcaraz gets to deuce and concedes another break point, but Fognini is again not able to take advantage, and we stay on par.

Fognini 3-2 Alcaraz
14:01 , Dom SmithSpot of bother for Fognini. Alcaraz starting to find his groove at 15-30. But the Italian scrambles back and heads 40-30 up. When he’s there, a fierce serve puts Alcaraz on the back foot, and a net putaway seals the deal. Fognini still keeping up with the pace.
Fognini 2-2 Alcaraz
13:57 , Dom SmithFognini is up for this! He strikes into the corner beautifully to bring up 0-30 on the Alcaraz serve.
There’s then an error from Alcaraz to overhit a crosscourt forehand. That means it’s 15-40 and two break points.
A classy ace saves one, for the defending champion. And soon enough it’s deuce. Once there, Alcaraz fires into the corner with conviction to head advantage up, and Fognini nets to keep up on serve at 2-2.
Fognini 2-1 Alcaraz
13:50 , Dom SmithFognini is sent close to the net at 30-15 up but can’t return in place, as a missed drop shot makes it 30-30 and brings Alcaraz into contention for a possible break.
But an ace is just what the doctor ordered, for Fognini, and a perfect slice into the far reaches of the corner gives Alcaraz too much to do. 2-1.
Fognini 1-1 Alcaraz
13:47 , Dom SmithA little shake of the hand in celebration as Alcaraz produces an ace with his first serve of the match.
The Spaniard then plays a lovely combination of fierce shots out to the right which Fognini can’t get back, bringing up 40-15. And a misplaced line backhand from Fognini strikes the net to make it one game all.
Fognini 1-0 Alcaraz
13:43 , Dom SmithFognini with a very confident start, serving well and flying into a 40-0 lead in the opening match on Centre Court.
Alcaraz gets a point back but is then flummoxed by a serve into the net. One game for Fognini.
We're underway!
13:41 , Dom SmithAnd we’re off here...
Not long now
13:38 , Dom SmithThe umpire has signalled the warm-up will shortly end and the match can then begin.
Warm-ups underway
13:33 , Dom SmithThe players are out and the warm-up is beginning
The players are in the tunnel getting ready
13:30 , Dom SmithFognini has just been shown standing in the tunnel, and there is Alcaraz. Out they come to the court imminently.
Opponent confirmed
13:24 , Dom SmithThe world No733 Oliver Tarvet has done it! He’s beaten Leandro Riedi and will play the winner of this match in the second round on Wednesday. He could well face Alcaraz. What a story!
Less than 15 minutes to go
13:17 , Dom SmithIt’s just under 15 minutes to go now before Alcaraz and Fognini get started in their first round match on Centre Court. The court is filling up nicely as the spectators take their seats.
Fabio Fognini
13:10 , Dom SmithFognini may be on the way down now, having just turned 38, but the Italian is no stranger to a decent run at Wimbledon; he has reached the third round seven times before.
A four-time Australian Open fourth-rounder, his best appearance at a Slam came at the French Open in 2011, when he reached the quarter-finals. Due to face Novak Djokovic, he had to withdraw due to injury. Gutting.

What lies ahead for the winner
12:55The winner of this match will face a qualifier in the second round, but which qualifier it will be remains to be seen.
British fans will hope it is Oliver Tarvet, ranked all the way in 733rd place in the ATP rankings but one of the most unlikely success stories of the Wimbledon qualifying campaign last week.
Tarvet, from St Albans, is just 21 years of age and would likely be set for a Centre Court spot with Alcaraz on Wednesday if they were the two players to come through their respective.
If not Tarvet, then Alcaraz or Fognini will face the Swiss player Leandro Riedi in the second round.
Riedi and Tarvet are currently battling it out on Court 4 as we speak. Tarvet took both of the first two sets, 6-4, 6-4, and the duo are on serve at 2-2 in the third.
Standard Sport's prediction
12:46 , Dom SmithIt is hard to look beyond a Carlos Alcaraz victory in this first-round clash against veteran Fognini. I’ll go further than that... it’s hard to look past a very comprehensive victory that would see Alcaraz whizz through to a second-round clash on Wednesday.
His game appears just too emphatic for Fognini, who is a fiery character himself but should struggle to contain the new favourite son of men’s tennis.
Standard Sport prediction: Alcaraz to win, in straight sets.

Head to head (H2H) record
12:31Alcaraz and Fognini have faced off twice before on the Tour, with the former unsurprisingly the winner on both occasions.
Both matches took place in Rio de Janeiro, first in 2022 and then in 2023. Can Alcaraz make it three from three this afternoon?
Good afternoon
12:23 , Dom SmithAfternoon from a very, very (very) sunny Wimbledon and welcome to Day 1 of the Championships.
We’re off with a bang on Centre Court where the first match sees the world No2 and 2nd seed Carlos Alcaraz, the double defending champion, take on the feisty Italian, Fabio Fognini - who is 38 and very much in the winter of his career.
It would be a monumental shock if he managed to overcome Alcaraz here, given the Spaniard’s exceptional form and that he will have the crowd right behind him.
You can follow coverage of the match right here. It begins at 1:30pm but we’ll have live coverage of all the build-up and then updates throughout what should be a thrilling first Centre Court offering of the tournament.
