Wimbledon 2025 LIVE: Carlos Alcaraz vs Andrey Rublev result and latest reaction

Wimbledon 2025 LIVE!

Carlos Alcaraz came back from a set down to beat Andrey Rublev and reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The Spaniard is looking to win the title at SW19 for the third consecutive year but has not been at his best in these Championships, going the distance with Fabio Fognini in his opening match and then needing four sets to beat Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round.

There was more stress for Alcaraz here, as Rublev edged a first set tie-break, but Alcaraz raised his level at the key moments in the remainder of the match to win 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-4. That is now 18 wins in a row for Alcaraz on the Wimbledon grass. He will next face Cameron Norrie, the latest remaining British singles player still in Wimbledon, for a place in the semi-finals.

"Every time I can turn up on this beautiful court it is a gift so I have to make the most of all the times I get on this court,” Norrie said. "It will be really difficult. Cam is playing great, I know him well, will be interesting but I’m just excited about playing quarter final here."

Point of the match?

21:04 , Matt Verri

As ever, there were some pretty special points from Carlos Alcaraz.

Not sure any were better than this.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 4-6 Alcaraz

20:53 , Matt Verri

Rublev launches the ball up, Alcaraz lets it bounce and then confidently dispatches the smash. Match point again.

Which he takes!

Alcaraz comes from behind to beat Rublev and reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals once again!

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 4-5* Alcaraz

20:51 , Matt Verri

Rublev has to go for it now but that brings risk and the forehand flies long.

That’s perfect though, backhand right on the baseline and he then thunders a forehand winner down the line. 30-15.

And Alcaraz then nets a routine shot with the court at his mercy - 30-30! Shake of the head and a deep breath from the Spaniard, Rublev bouncing around behind the baseline.

So, so good. Ace down the T, at the perfect time. Match point.

Nope, not this time. Backhand into the net again. Deuce.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 4-5* Alcaraz

20:47 , Matt Verri

Rublev doing all he can, as he looks to hold and ask the question of Alcaraz.

Still looking pretty fed up with life, but that forehand is too good and brings him a comfortable hold.

Now for a sit down and one last chance to think of how to break Alcaraz.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 *3-5 Alcaraz

20:44 , Matt Verri

He’s not done yet. Alcaraz sends a forehand long and that’s 15-15, Rublev still hanging in this match.

The Russian then tries to guess on the first serve - goes the wrong way, ace.

Lovely disguise on the slice from Alcaraz, 40-15 and firmly in control.

There’s the hold. One game away.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 3-4* Alcaraz

20:41 , Matt Verri

Fair play to Rublev, that was a gutsy hold from where he was.

Needs to find some magic on Alcaraz’s serve now. Two more chances.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 *2-4 Alcaraz

20:40 , Matt Verri

This is getting away from the Russian in a hurry. Two more loose points and it’s 0-30.

He stops the rot slightly with some nice touch at the net.

Nothing nice about that - ragged forehand pulled wide. Two break points for Alcaraz, and these might as well be match points.

First goes, Alcaraz not quite making the volley as he charges to the net. Rublev then serves his way to deuce.

Alcaraz back to break point, forehand pummels through Rublev’s defences. Can’t take this either, forehand netted. Back to deuce.

Alcaraz somehow finds the line with a brilliant drop shot, Rublev can’t make the forehand round the post. We’re at deuce once more, game has gone on for more than six minutes.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 *2-4 Alcaraz

20:34 , Matt Verri

Rublev swinging away like a man who’s lost interest in this now.

Returns flying left, right and centre... anywhere but in, really.

Alcaraz holds to love and barely had to hit a shot.

20:31 , Matt Verri

Rublev absolutely smashed his racket against his foot after that break of serve.

Did well to avoid attacking the grass and the big old fine that would have come with that.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 2-3* Alcaraz

20:30 , Matt Verri

Now some stress for Rublev, 0-30.

Alcaraz will have a second serve to attack too - and he now has three break points! Rublev muttering to himself furiously.

133mph first serve out wide saves the first of them - two to go.

Second saved too, brave flat backhand from Rublev and he’s pulled it back to 30-40.

Second serve sits up for Alcaraz... slaps it into the net! Deuce, three break points have come and gone.

Number four coming up, Rublev’s backhand lets him down this time.

Alcaraz breaks! Could that be the match?

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 *2-2 Alcaraz

20:24 , Matt Verri

It’s taken 15 attempts, but finally one of them wins a point on the other’s serve in this set.

Rublev gets on the board - and then doubles that tally when Alcaraz slices long. 40-30.

Rublev has half a chance with the pass as Alcaraz approaches, but he can’t make it.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 2-1* Alcaraz

20:21 , Matt Verri

We’re rattling through these games.

Rublev’s time to waste no time in ticking another one off.

Problem is he’s been getting broken at the end of sets when there’s no real time to make up for it.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 *1-1 Alcaraz

20:18 , Matt Verri

15th ace of the match for Alcaraz. Swiftly followed by the 16th.

Rublev has had the fastest serve and has been quicker on average, but it’s 16-5 on the ace count.

Rapid hold.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 1-0* Alcaraz

20:16 , Matt Verri

Whatever Rublev did off court as worked.

Reset well after another disappointing end to a set.

First serve catches the line and skids on, Alcaraz can’t get it back and that’s a hold to love.

20:13 , Matt Verri

Rublev has gone off court after that set, but Alcaraz has stayed on and trots over to go and have a chat with his box.

Plenty of fist pumps and nods of the heads. Alcaraz now spinning his racket on his feet to amuse himself - looking relaxed as ever.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-6 Alcaraz

20:10 , Matt Verri

Ace. Ace. 30-0. Unreturned first serve. 40-0.

Alcaraz brings up three set points in what feels like 30 seconds.

Sublime drop shot gets the job done - Alcaraz one set away from the quarter-finals!

Rublev 7-6 3-6 4-5* Alcaraz

20:08 , Matt Verri

Rublev serving to extend this third set.

Looks like he’ll do so, slight drop in level from Alcaraz in this game.

Ace down the T and Rublev marches back to his chair. Now just the small matter of finding a way to break Alcaraz’s serve.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 *3-5 Alcaraz

20:05

They’ve each had four break points. Rublev has taken one of his, Alcaraz three. That’s the difference.

Rublev snatches at that forehand, got to be feeling rattled after the last couple of games. Decides to blame the racket, over to his chair to change it.

Don’t think this one works either. Return smashed miles out.

Maybe it does actually - forehand winner lands just inside the line. Alcaraz then goes long, 40-30 and Rublev not out of this game.

He is now. Forehands drops just out. Alcaraz holds.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 3-4* Alcaraz

20:00 , Matt Verri

How crucial that could prove to be?

Rublev has the court at his mercy with the overhead, but tamely hits it back at Alcaraz... and he makes the pass! Loud roar to his box after that.

Looking very important now, as a ridiculous Alcaraz return clips the line and helps him bring up break point.

INCREDIBLE!

Alcaraz looks to have lost the point two, three, maybe even four times... and then at full stretch makes the most stunning crosscourt pass.

If you’re going to break, might as well do it in style.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 *3-3 Alcaraz

19:56 , Matt Verri

Feels like an error in judgement. Rublev with a return that looks to be flying long, but Alcaraz decides to volley it on the stretch and doesn’t make it.

Rublev then plays a brilliant point, such clean hitting. 0-30 and he has another opening.

Chance to bring up three points, but he completely mishits the forehand. Alcaraz then gets it back to 30-30, as he did earlier in the set.

But Rublev’s box are on their feet - runs down the drop shot and makes the forehand! Break point.

Ace down the T. So good from Alcaraz under huge pressure.

That’s... less good. Double fault and back to deuce.

Despite that, Alcaraz is still able to grind out another hold.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 3-2* Alcaraz

19:50 , Matt Verri

Rublev hangs in the point for as long as he can, but Alcaraz gradually wears him down and then puts away the forehand. 30-30.

The Russian finds a first serve just when he really needs it, Alcaraz can’t get it back in play.

And another sets up the point, before Rublev’s forehand does the rest. Hold.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 *2-2 Alcaraz

19:46 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz has won 73% of points behind his second serve this evening. That’s a huge number.

Nearly at 80% behind the first which is getting the job done too.

Rublev takes a bit of a wild swing at the latest swinging serve out wide, comfortable hold for Alcaraz.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 2-1* Alcaraz

19:42 , Matt Verri

Rublev hasn’t been convincing at the net all match and that pattern continues. Soft hands needed with the volley - instead he almost sends it into the crowd.

Flat crosscourt backhand from Alcaraz is too good, 40-30 and he’s threatening to drag Rublev to deuce from 40-0 up.

Russian holds firm - forehand gets him out of potential trouble.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 *1-1 Alcaraz

19:39 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz sends a forehand long and that’s 0-30 - as good as it’s got for Rublev on the Spaniard’s serve for a long time.

Gets even better, two break points!

One goes, as Alcaraz puts away the forehand behind the first serve. Second also slips away from Rublev after a shanked shot.

Two first serves later and it’s a hold.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 1-0* Alcaraz

19:34 , Matt Verri

Rublev with 13 winners and 21 unforced errors. Alcaraz slightly better, but still fairly untidy with 19 winners and 18 unforced errors.

Alcaraz goes for a very ambitious drop shot return, doesn’t make it and Rublev gets things back on track with a hold to love.

Rublev 7-6 3-6 Alcaraz

19:30 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz suddenly serving for the set.

His drop shot isn’t the best, but Rublev gets in too tight to the net and can’t make the backhand.

Rublev then misses the return, three set points for Alcaraz.

Superb pick-up at the net and that’s the set! He made his move at the perfect time to level this match.

Rublev 7-6 3-5* Alcaraz

19:28 , Matt Verri

Hold up. This is a chance. Ball hits the top of the net from a Rublev backhand, drops back on his side of the court and it’s 0-30.

First serve perfectly placed out wide, Alcaraz can’t get it back in. And Rublev then wins a longer rally to get back to 30-30.

Ooooh... that’s long though. Alcaraz has a break point.

Double fault! That’s an absolutely disastrous couple of points from Rublev.

Rublev 7-6 *3-4 Alcaraz

19:24 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz got to 40-30 in the second game of this set - that’s as close as either have got to a break.

No 30-30 points, no deuces, certainly no break points.

Another simple volley at the net for Alcaraz and guess what? A hold to love.

Rublev 7-6 3-3* Alcaraz

19:21 , Matt Verri

They’re both rotating between forehand winners and forehand errors. Alcaraz leaning towards the latter in this game.

Has to feel of a set that could be ticking towards another tie-break. That has almost certainly jinxed it, can expect a break now.

Not here, though. Rublev holds to love.

Rublev 7-6 *2-3 Alcaraz

19:18 , Matt Verri

Rublev clubs a forehand winner into the corner of the court... but can’t clear the net next point as he goes for something similar.

Familiar theme - both players using the serve and volley well, particularly late in games.

Alcaraz does so here to wrap up the hold.

Rublev 7-6 2-2* Alcaraz

19:14 , Matt Verri

These two move ridiculously well on the grass. No such thing as a lost cause.

Rublev thunders down his second ace of the match to get to 30-0, before winning an exchange of heavy forehands.

Serve and volley - hold to love.

Rublev 7-6 *1-2 Alcaraz

19:10 , Matt Verri

Rublev has barely won a point on Alcaraz’s serve since the start of the first set.

Oh there you go, just needed me to jinx him into action. Sensational backhand pass as Alcaraz tries the serve and volley.

Not enough to stop the Spaniard ticking off another hold.

Rublev 7-6 1-1* Alcaraz

19:08 , Matt Verri

Rublev had some tough service games at the end of that first set, but it’s far more comfortable here.

Couple of cheap points behind the first serve and he’s swiftly 40-15 up.

Alcaraz slaps a forehand winner down the line, but an ace out wide seals the deal for Rublev.

Rublev 7-6 *0-1 Alcaraz

19:05 , Matt Verri

Massive roar goes up... from No1 Court. Cameron Norrie has beaten Nicolas Jarry in five sets and he will face the winner of this match.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, is up and running in the set with a routine hold.

19:02 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz won more points, hit more winners, made more returns... but lost the set.

He’s going to have to come from behind on Centre. Settle in.

Rublev 7-6 Alcaraz

19:00 , Matt Verri

STUNNING. Rublev with an absolutely sensational backhand down the line, had no margin for error there. He leads 6-5 and has set point on his serve.

SET RUBLEV! Deep forehand doesn’t come back and the Russian takes the tie-break!

That did not feel likely until those last couple of points.

Rublev 6-6 Alcaraz

18:59 , Matt Verri

Fist pump from Alcaraz towards his box, as Rublev nets a forehand. Spaniard leads 4-3.

There’s the mini-break! Rublev is on top in the point for 90% of it, but Alcaraz scrambles around the court and does brilliantly to stay in it. Rublev then nets the backhand down the line. 5-3 Alcaraz.

First serve gets Rublev within touch again at 5-4, but he’s got work to do. Two serves from Alcaraz to come.

Back on serve! Alcaraz this time finds the net. 5-5.

Rublev 6-6 Alcaraz

18:55 , Matt Verri

Good start from Rublev, takes the opening point on his serve.

But two first serves later and Alcaraz leads 2-1. Rublev left in a heap in near enough the exact same patch of grass that brought Alcaraz down. Gives it a suitably filthy look.

Russian levels it up at 2-2, Alcaraz unable to make the pass on the stretch. Timely first serve, he edges in front. 3-2.

Body serve from Alcaraz is too good. 3-3.

Rublev 6-6 Alcaraz

18:52 , Matt Verri

Short ball sits up for Alcaraz and a violent swing of the forehand does the rest.

I make that 14 points in a row on serve. In fact, that’s 15 in a row as Rublev fails to make the return.

To a tie-break we go!

Rublev 6-5* Alcaraz

18:49 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz stretches to return and then trips over his own feet, throwing his racket in the direction of a Rublev forehand. He’s quickly back up.

It’s another huge point coming up at 30-30. Set potentially on the line.

Rublev wins that one, but a brilliant return from Alcaraz then forces deuce.

But the Russian battles his way through to another hold, guaranteeing himself at least a tie-break.

Rublev *5-5 Alcaraz

18:45 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz a bit stranded at the net, but Rublev gets nowhere near on the lob and it’s a simple smash for the defending champion.

After a shaky start on serve, Alcaraz has sorted things out quickly. Racing through these games now.

Ace down the T and it’s level again in the set.

Rublev 5-4* Alcaraz

18:42 , Matt Verri

Another Rublev advance to the net ends with him trudging back empty-handed. Lob from Alcaraz is good enough.

Alcaraz looks to drop a return right on the baseline, but it’s just long. 30-30.

That return is a good one and it brings Alcaraz a break point. Well and truly on the charge.

Can’t take it, Spaniard lines up the pass down the line but can’t find the line. Deuce.

Low slice does for Alcaraz and that’s a really impressive hold from Rublev in the end, that set could have got away from him in a hurry.

Rublev *4-4 Alcaraz

18:37 , Matt Verri

The Alcaraz forehand is starting to warm up. Hits a nice winner back behind Rublev to wrong-foot him.

And once again Rublev then doesn’t do enough with the volley. He’s 0/4 when coming to the net. Alcaraz, meanwhile, has won 11 of the last 15 points.

Make that 12 of 16. Ace out wide. Hold to love.

Rublev 4-3* Alcaraz

18:34 , Matt Verri

Big, big return from Alcaraz and the scrambling Rublev can’t get it back.

The Russian is then in complete control of the next point - but makes a real mess of the volley with Alcaraz nowhere to be seen. 15-40, two break points for Alcaraz.

Needs only one! Rublev hammers a forehand, Alcaraz drops it back at his toes and again Rublev can’t find the touch at the net.

Back on serve.

Rublev *4-2 Alcaraz

18:30 , Matt Verri

Lovely shot, Rublev flicking the crosscourt pass beyond Alcaraz as he comes up to the net.

Ace out wide is a good response from the Spaniard, and his second serve then just about catches the line.

Another unreturned serve gives him a hold that keeps him in the set.

Rublev 4-1* Alcaraz

18:27 , Matt Verri

Response from Alcaraz, bit more intensity on his groundstrokes all of a sudden. Needs to be, Rublev looks full of confidence.

Russian’s forehand in particular has been a real weapon.

Big point coming up at 30-30... and Rublev wins it. He’s nine out of ten for points behind his first serve so far.

Serve and volley consolidates the break.

Rublev *3-1 Alcaraz

18:23 , Matt Verri

Rublev with good depth in the rally and it forces the mistake from Alcaraz, who is under pressure at 0-30.

He goes for a cute drop shot- doesn’t clear the net. Three break points for Rublev.

And it’s a break to love! Well then.

Rublev 2-1* Alcaraz

18:19 , Matt Verri

Over on No1 Court, Cam Norrie and Nicolas Jarry have gone to a fifth set. Just the one break of serve in 48 games so far...

Back on Centre, Alcaraz has a chance to bring up a break point but he can only send a forehand into the net.

Another unforced error next point, Rublev holds.

Rublev *1-1 Alcaraz

18:16 , Matt Verri

At the sixth time of asking, Alcaraz has his first point of the match.

But he follows it with a double fault, 15-30.

No damage done, though, as the Spaniard fires his first forehand winner and Rublev then goes long with a couple of returns.

Rublev 1-0* Alcaraz

18:12 , Matt Verri

Fair to say Alcaraz hasn’t got going yet.

Barely makes a return in that game, as Rublev races to a hold to love to kick things off.

18:09 , Matt Verri

Rublev to serve first.

We’re up and running on Centre Court for the final time today!

Here we go!

18:04 , Matt Verri

The team of them are out bang on schedule, as ever at Wimbledon.

Both of them give off a lot of energy, long before a ball is his. They each turn away from the coin toss and sprint back to the baseline.

Timings update

17:58 , Matt Verri

Alcaraz and Rublev will walk out onto court at 6:02pm. That’s the plan, anyway.

Centre Court roof has been closed all day and it looks like that will remain the case for this final match.

Over on Court 1...

17:51 , Matt Verri

Cam Norrie is in a right old battle.

The Briton won the first two sets but lost a third-set tie-break and is now serving to make it 5-5 in the fourth.

Nicolas Jarry has sent down 42 aces so far. Yes, 42.

Game, set and match!

17:42 , Matt Verri

Aryna Sabalenka wins 6-4 7-6 and the top seed continues her progression through to the quarter-finals.

And it means Alcaraz and Rublev are next up!

Centre Court update

17:37 , Matt Verri

It’s gone to a tie-break between Sabalenka and Mertens in the second set.

Currently 2-2 in that. If Sabalenka wins that, she will be through to the quarter-finals.

If not, it’s a decider and Alcaraz and Rublev have a wait on their hands.

Alcaraz previews Rublev clash

17:26 , Matt Verri

Carlos Alcaraz was full of praise for Andrey Rublev when asked at his pre-match press conference for his thoughts on their fourth-round showdown.

“I think he’s a really powerful player,” Alcaraz said.

“I think he plays really well on grass. He always loves to be aggressive. When he finds his forehand, I think he likes to move his opponent from side to side. It’s going to be really difficult because on grass, the movement is the most difficult thing to do.

“I think we are really similar that we always like to find our forehand. Doesn’t matter if it’s inside out on the forehand side. Always try to play aggressively.

“He has a big serve as well. It’s gonna be a really interesting one to be honest.”

Standard Sport prediction

17:14 , Matt Verri

Carlos Alcaraz has not yet hit top form at these championships.

There have been too many moments where his level has dropped. The defending champion was taken to five sets by Fabio Fognini, and Jan-Lennard Struff took a set off him in the third round.

Andrey Rublev is capable of taking advantage of those poor spells and Alcaraz could have to work hard to get over the line, but he should eventually do so.

Alcaraz to win in four sets.

Head-to-head record

17:08 , Matt Verri

Carlos Alcaraz has won two of his three previous matches against Andrey Rublev.

The most recent of those was a 6-3 7-6 victory at the ATP Finals at the end of last season.

This will be the first time the two have faced off on grass.

(Reuters/PA Wire)

Start time

17:01 , Matt Verri

Still to be decided!

It will follow the conclusion of Aryna Sabalenka’s match against Elise Mertens.

The world number one won the first set 6-4, but she is a break down in the second. Mertens leads it 3-1.

If that goes to a decider, Alcaraz and Rublev have a bit of a wait on their hands.
