Wimbledon 2025: Jack Pinnington Jones makes it ten British players through to second round

Jack Pinnington Jones made it a successful main-draw Grand Slam debut as he beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry at Wimbledon.

The 22-year-old from Kingston-upon-Thames made it ten British players through to the second round on home soil, as he saw off a player ranked well over 200 places above him.

Pinnington Jones trailed 4-1 in the third set but stormed back to win six of the next seven games and secure a 7-6 6-3 7-5 victory on Court 17.

He will face 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli in the second round.

Dan Evans booked his place in the second round, in a match that guaranteed the first victory for a British player on Tuesday.

He faced compatriot Jay Clarke and won 6-1 7-5 6-2, with his prize a potential second-round showdown with Novak Djokovic.

British number one Jack Draper then got his championships off to the perfect start, the fourth seed leading 6-2 6-2 2-1 when Sebastian Baez retired with injury.

Elsewhere, however, the Brits struggled on another blisteringly hot day. Heather Watson was unable to secure her first Grand Slam win for three years as she fell to a three-set defeat against Clara Tauson.

The 33-year-old from Guernsey has not won on tennis’ biggest stage since reaching the fourth round at the All England Club in 2022, but received a wildcard into the main draw this summer and threatened to take full advantage.

Watson won the first set against 23rd seed Tauson on Court 12 but could not complete the job, with the Dane battling to a 2-6 6-4 6-3 win in sweltering conditions.

There had been promising signs for Watson in the opening set, earning three consecutive breaks on the Tauson serve en route to winning it in 31 minutes, but she was broken herself in the opening game of the second set and was unable to wrestle back control.

The decider was a tight affair with six straight holds until Watson was broken at 3-3, as Tauson won four straight games to book her place in the second round.

Asked if she viewed it as a missed opportunity, Watson said: “That's exactly the first words that came out of my mouth when I saw my coaches: I let that slip through my fingers.

“I needed to be on it that second set, and the first game especially. With how I've been playing and how much experience I have under my belt now, I felt like this match was really mine, and I really believed it was, but some days you just don't play your best.

“I'm saying that from the second set. I was playing my best in the first set. It's not the entire match, but it happens sometimes.”

British men’s wildcard Johannus Monday is also out of Wimbledon after losing to 13th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets.

Monday held his own on Court 3 but was beaten 4-6 4-6 2-6 in a match that lasted an hour and 43 minutes.

Big-hitting Paul was made to work hard in the hot conditions, though, with his nine aces only two more than Monday managed.

The 23-year-old from Hull is ranked at No224 in the world and was making his Grand Slam main draw debut.

George Loffhagen, who also received a wildcard, threatened an upset but was ultimately beaten by Pedro Martínez.

The Briton took the opening set but Martinez, ranked 241 places above his opponent, came from behind to win 2-6 6-2 6-4 6-2.

Jodie Burrage then made it four defeats for the British players on day two, as she returned to Wimbledon after missing last year’s championships due to injury.

American Caty McNally proved too strong for the 26-year-old, easing to a 6-3 6-1 victory on Court 18.

Fran Jones lost in the first round despite winning the first set 6-1 against a higher-ranked opponent in Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine, who beat Jones 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

A record-breaking seven Brits won their first-round matches on the first day of the Championships, including Emma Raducanu and men’s world No733 Oliver Tarvet.
