Wimbledon 2019: Hundreds of tennis fans flock to set up tents in queue for tickets

Hundreds of keen tennis fans have pitched up their tents to start queueing for highly sought after Wimbledon tickets.

Eager tennis spectators joined the famous Wimbledon queue on Sunday, with over 24 hours to go until the turnstiles open for the tournament.

Almost 50,0000 people attend the event each year, which also attracts A-list celebrities. Members of the royal family traditionally also attend the latter stages of the tournament.

Police are planning a show of force to protect tennis fans attending the annual event, with uniformed and plain-clothes officers on patrol to detect any potential threats.

Those hoping to clinch a ticket arrived with tents and camping chairs in preparation to spend the night queueing.

Good weather conditions have been predicted for the start of the tournament, as Novak Djokovic begins the defence of his 2018 title on Centre Court.

Sunshine is forecast as the Serbian's bid for a fifth championships in SW19 kicks off against German Philipp Kohlschreiber at 1pm.

Fan favourite Andy Murray will be returning to the hallowed grass courts for the first time since 2017 but only as a doubles player.

With scorching temperatures forecast for the weekend, players and fans will welcome cooler conditions for the first day of play at the All England Club in south-west London.

Speaking on Friday, Met Office forecaster Martin Bowles said: "It's quite a good forecast as far as Wimbledon is concerned.

"For the most part for the first week we're expecting it to be dry."

Mr Bowles said the weather will be a mixture of sunny spells and cloud, with the temperature possibly reaching 24C on Monday before falling to 21 or 22C later in the week.
