Wimbledon 2019: Four major changes revealed - including new retractable roof on Court 1

Wimbledon have announced some major changes ahead of this summer's tournament.

It has been confirmed total prize money will go up 11.8% to £38m with champions banking £2.35m each – a rise of £100,000.

Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber both earned £2.25m for their victories in 2018

The new Court 1 will be open this year with a retractable roof and an increase in capacity of 1,000 seats to 12,345.

An opening ceremony will be held on Sunday May 19 with John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova playing tennis – and Paloma Faith in concert.

Meanwhile, the morning start time will move to 11am and, for the first time, there will be a final-set tie-break at 12-12 to avoid marathon matches.

Andy Murray provides injury update ahead of Wimbledon 2019

After last year's exhibition matches, there will be quad wheelchair singles and doubles this year.

And in a major boost for fans, it has been confirmed tickets will be sold via an online ballot, although that will not come into play until the autumn and for next summer's tournament.

There will be no shot clock but chief executive Richard Lewis said it was “highly likely” it will be introduced in 2020.

The draw for the tournament will be held on Friday June 28 before getting underway on Monday July 1.

Andy Murray has officially until June 18 to apply for a Wimbledon wildcard – but the All England Club would be prepared to give him more time to play in his home Grand Slam.

The double champion last played at SW19 in 2017 – and he underwent a second hip operation in January.

Murray is entitled to enter nine ATP Tour events on a protective ranking – and he has already used four. If he is fit to play singles or doubles at Wimbledon, he could ask for a wildcard as a former champion to save his protective ranking entries for other events.
