Wimbledon 2022: fascinating photographs offer glimpse of championship over the years

As Wimbledon fever grips the nation these fascinating photos give a glimpse of the tournament in years gone by.

Since the first contest back in 1877, the world-famous tournament has enjoyed an illustrious history and today is one of four tennis Grand Slams.

Come rain or shine it has attracted huge crowds through the years, with these images showing some quintessentially British moments, including people drinking tea as they queue for entry.

The weather this year looks like it could be glorious, but there have been years in the past where fans have endured plenty of rain.

One black and white image even shows an umpire draped in a long raincoat.

In some photos crowds have gathered under umbrellas - a far cry from the stereotypical picture of sunny lawns as spectators munch strawberries and cream.

King George VI can even be seen playing in the championship in a photo from 1926, while the iconic Fred Perry is photographed in action in 1934.

Dapper tennis fans clad in suits fill the stands in some images, captured between 1910 to 1963, while older images give a glimpse of how sportswear has developed.
