Andy Murray is adamant he can once again beat fellow champions Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as he continues his comeback at Wimbledon.
The 32-year-old’s career appeared over earlier this year but after successful hip surgery, the two-time champion at SW19 is enjoying a renaissance in the mixed doubles alongside Serena Williams.
The pair strolled to victory on Centre Court on Saturday in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) against Alexa Guarachi and Andreas Mies with No 14 seeds Raquel Atawo and Fabrice Martin up next.
But that has not stopped Murray looking to the future and competing for Grand Slams in the singles once again.
“Why not?” Murray remarked when asked whether he felt he could beat the best of the past and future. “If someone can give me a reason why I shouldn’t be able to compete again then I would listen to it, but so far I haven’t really been given one.”
Murray insists it is merely a matter of getting his body right, with his tennis game in good condition.
“If, physically, I can get back to a good level my tennis is still fine,” he added.
“I’m sure that, tennis-wise, I will be able to keep up with guys.”
Murray has been encouraged by the landscape in the men’s game remaining similar to that of his prime, with the young players yet to break the stranglehold of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
Murray said: “I don’t feel that the game has moved on and I won’t be able to get back. A lot of the same guys are still there.”
