Wimbledon 2018: Victoria Azarenka hits out at 'horrendous' John Inverdale commentary on BBC

Victoria Azarenka has criticised the BBC’s John Inverdale, saying it is “amazing” that someone “not so knowledgeable” would be commentating on tennis.

The former world No 1 reached Saturday’s Wimbledon mixed doubles final with her partner Jamie Murray after beating British wild card pair Harriet Dart and Jay Clarke 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday.

After the match she tweeted: “We are just rewatching our mixed doubles now … whoever is commentating this match is just comical and not in a good way.”

She followed it with another tweeting nodding along sarcastically to Inverdale’s commentary.

Asked about the tweets, Azarenka said: “I think it was more irony in my tweet, I don’t think it is frustration, I think it is pretty amazing that there are people who are not so knowledgeable commentating on the tennis.

“I will leave you with what he said. ‘Azarenka’s second serve: woof!’ I have no idea [what he meant]. It was horrendous.”

It is not the first time Inverdale has come into controversy over his broadcasting. In 2013 he was forced to apologise for his “ham-fisted comments” after commenting that the Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli “was never going to be a looker”.
