Wimbledon 2015: day seven – as it happened

Roger Federer breaks the serve of Roberto Bautista Agut.

Roger Federer glides on, untroubled in his kingdom. He beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-2, 6-X and will play Gilles Simon on Wednesday, although he did need a few match points to get there. But will Novak Djokovic join him in the last eight? He’s in an engrossing battle with Kevin Anderson on Court 1 and you can follow that match with Bryan Armen Graham here. This blog is over. Thanks for reading. Bye.

Roger Federer is playing superlative tennis. So be afraid.

You really could watch Roger Federer play tennis all day. He Federers a forehand past a flailing Bautista Agut and breaks for a 2-1 lead in the third set.

Roger Federer wins the second set to lead 6-2, 6-2. He’s looking so cool. If he’s going to win an 18th slam, it’s going to be here.

Federer swipes a super forehand return past Bauista Agut and breaks to lead 5-2 in the second set. He really loves grass. Who loves grass more: Roger Federer or cows?

Bautista Agut is ready to continue. Let’s hope he’s okay. Federer leads by a set and a break.

While Bautista Agut receives treatment, Federer changes shirts. There a few wolf whistles from the crowd. Sexist.

Alert! Alert! Alert! Novak Djokovic has lost the first set on a tie-break to Kevin Anderson! Follow it here.

I’ve just turned up on Centre Court. Roberto Bautista Agut has just slipped badly and hurt his foot. He needs the trainer on.

Gilles Simon earns three match points with a banging ace. He only needs one! He beats Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to reach hs first quarter-final here and extend his winning record to 7-4 over the Czech. Simon is likely to play Roger Federer on Monday.

Berdych holds. Simon will serve for the match at 5-2.

Tomas Berdych, trailing 5-1 in the third set, is serving to stay in the tournanment. Gilles Simon has been brilliant.

Marin Cilic reaches the last eight for the second successive year with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over the battling Denis Kudla. He will could play Novak Djokovic next. Djokovic beat Cilic in five sets in the quarters last year. Is revenge on the menu?

Marin Cilic will serve for the match against Denis Kudla. He pulls the American to the net and breaks for a 6-5 lead with a volley.

The good news for Gilles Simon is that he looks like winning. The bad news is he looks like playing Roger Federer in the last eight. Federer has just won the first set 6-2 against Roberto Bautista Agut.

Tomas Berdych has entered meltdown mode. Gilles Simon breaks again and leads 3-0 in the third setd.

Denis Kudla shows terrific balance and footwork to put the skates on and stop himself skidding into the net, or falling over, as he puts a smash away against Marin Cilic. He holds for 5-4 in the fourth set and the young American is giving a very good account of himself.

It is going to take something special for Tomas Berdych to win from here. Gilles Simon breaks in the first game of the third set and leads 6-3, 6-3, 1-0. The Frenchman has never been in the last eight here before.

Roger Federer has immediately clicked into gear. He’s broken on Centre Court for a 3-2 lead.

Gilles Simon bangs down an ace and takes the second set against Tomas Berdych. He leads 6-3, 6-3. He’s heading for his first quarter-final at a grand slam - indeed only his second quarter-final at a grand slam - since the Australian Open in 2009 if he can keep this going.

Tomas Berdych is serving to stay in the second set against Gilles Simon. I reckon that Roger Federer would like to avoid him in the last eight - assuming the Swiss can beat Roberto Bautista Agut. They’ve just started their match on Centre Court.

The people who ask Caroline Wozniacki questions about Rory McIlroy are weird. Here’s an excerpt from her press conference today.

Q. Do you have any messages for Rory McIlroy who sustained an injury to his ankle today?

THE MODERATOR: We’ll stick to tennis questions.

So Andy Murray has dealt with a big server. How will Novak Djokovic cope with the threat of Kevin Anderson? Let Bryan Armen Graham be your guide.

Gilles Simon has a 6-4 winning record against Tomas Berdych. He’s up a set and a break against him now.

The order of play for tomorrow’s women’s quarter-finals is out. And here it is! Looks good, right?

CENTRE COURT - SHOW COURT - 13:00 START

1 Maria Sharapova (RUS) [4] 33 vs Coco Vandeweghe (USA) 51

2 Serena Williams (USA) [1] 1 vs Victoria Azarenka (BLR) [23] 24

No.1 COURT - SHOW COURT - 13:00 START

1 Garbine Muguruza (ESP) [20] 73 vs Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) [15] 81

2 Madison Keys (USA) [21] 105 vs Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) [13] 113

Andy Murray has passed an extremely tough test, dodging the boulders from big-serving Ivo Karlovic to win 7-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 and reach yet another Wimbledon quarter-final. He’ll play Vasek Pospisil on Wednesday. I suspect he would have taken that when the draw was made. It could have been David Ferrer or Rafael Nadal waiting for him.

Marin Cilic, who’s promised himself not to do anything easily over these two weeks, has taken the third set against Denis Kudla. After dropping the second, the US Open champion now leads 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

It has been 16 minutes since the end of the first set. Simon and Berdych will need to get warm again quickly.

Medical staff are taking a spectator away on a stretcher on Court 2. I’m not sure what’s happened.

It seems that a fan has fallen ill on Court 2, meaning that the start of the second set between Tomas Berdych and Gilles Simon has been delayed.

Stan Wawrinka is through to the last eight. He wallops a forehand down the line to seal a slender but valuable 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory over the 16th seed, David Goffin, and a meeting with Richard Gasquet.

Stan Wawrinka has broken back in the third set. Goffin’s lead didn’t last long. They’re on serve again on Court 1. It’s been such a tight match, with some fine shots from both men.

Gilles Simon breaks again and he wins the first set 6-3 against Tomas Berdych! The winner of this match could play Roger Federer.

There’s a long way to go, he’s two sets down, but David Goffin has broken Stan Wawrinka and leads 3-2 in the third set. It’s still on!

It’s all square on Court 3! Denis Kudla levels it against Marin Cilic, wining the second set 6-4. Cilic has had a few tough matches already.

Nick Kyrgios is about to play some doubles on Court 17. He’s partnering Madison Keys against Lukas Kubot and Andrea Hlavackova.

Over on Court 2, Gilles Simon, involved in some late-night Saturday entertainment with Gael Monfils two days ago, is in action against the sixth seed, Tomas Berdych. And it’s Simon who has the first break, snatching it for a 3-2 lead.

Andy Murray has dropped the third set 7-5 against Ivo Karlovic. He leads 7-6, 6-4, 5-7. Follow it here.

Stan Wawrinka wins the second set to lead 7-6, 7-6!

Wawrinka holds. It’s another tie-break. He won the first.

After his epic against John Isner on Friday/Saturday, Marin Cilic is in action against another American. He’s a set up against Denis Kudla.

David Goffin holds for 6-5. He had to save two break points along the way.

The women’s quarter-finals look like this, then. In the top half, it’s...

Serena Williams v Victoria Azarenka

Maria Sharapova v Coco Vandeweghe

While in the bottom half, it’s...

Madison Keys v Agnieszka Radwanska

Garbine Muguruza v Timea Bacsinszky

Garbine Muguruza is into her first Wimbledon quarter-final! The 21-year-old Spaniard wins 6-4, 6-4 to set up a match against Timea Bacsinszky and Caroline Wozniacki still hasn’t been past the fourth round here.

Another interesting exchange in a press conference. This time it’s with Maria Sharapova, will play Coco Vandeweghe tomorrow.

Q. An interesting article appeared at the weekend about your relationship with people who join your team, sort of suggesting you don’t much have personal conversations with them for several months before you sort of trust them and allow them to have those conversations with you. Can you clarify what the relationship is, what the situation is there?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Where did you read that?

Q. In The Independent on Sunday.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Interesting. I wonder who their sources are (laughter). I’m not aware of that article. Pretty much sounds like baloney to me. Take my word for it, but I’m sure you won’t (smiling).

Garbine Muguruza breaks Caroline Wozniacki to love for a 5-4 lead in the second set. She’ll now serve for the match.

What a slice of luck for Goffin. Wawrinka broke Goffin early in the second set. In the next game, Goffin earned a break point. He hit a backhand that was whizzing miles wide - but it hit the top of the net and was diverted back on course, causing Wawrinka to bash a forehand long! They’re back on serve.

An extract from a press conference today with Coco Vandeweghe, granddaughter of 1952 Miss America Colleen Kay Hutchins and former New York Knick Ernie Vandeweghe, the niece of basketball player Kiki Vandeweghe and the daughter of former olympic swimmer Tauna Vandeweghe. The 23-year-old hasn’t spoken to her father for seven years.

Q. For the British public, they may not know too much about you. Is there a story behind your name, Coco, any story at all?

COCO VANDEWEGHE: Well, my mom is just a ‘60s child and we all have nicknames, and none of us go by our real names. My real name is Colleen. I’m named after my grandmother, who was Miss America.

My older brother who just flew in on a flight out of nowhere, I don’t know how he appeared here, I know he doesn’t have the money for a ticket, so I don’t know how he got here, but he showed up. His name is Beau. I have a younger brother who is Crash and a younger sister who is Honnie. We all have very interesting names.

I have always enjoyed Coco, except my early school years when people were teasing me, Coco Pebbles and Coco Puffs and all that sort of stuff, that definitely bugs me. But I love my name.

Q. Sports has always been a big thing in your family, but you said your grandmother was Miss America. What kind of influence was she in your life?

COCO VANDEWEGHE: She was a big influence. My grandparents lived with us when my mom moved back out to the West Coast when my parents divorced. So I had both my grandparents live with us the whole time growing up until they both passed away.

So my grandmother was a huge influence on me. I mean, even from just kind of, my mom was mad at me, so I’d sneak in my grandparents room and hide and eat Oreo cookies and stuff. I’d kind of get out of trouble with my mom.

So, I mean, just being kind of the presence that she was able to teach me and how to conduct yourself. Also she made a big deal of me being able to go ‑‑ she put me in church and made me do talks in church so I could speak in front of a group of people and be comfortable with that at a young age.

And then also she made me do plays all the time, which I wasn’t a very theatrical person, or I should say, I didn’t enjoy it, but I did it because she enjoyed watching me do it.

That was also another aspect that she brought in. But just, you know, teaching me how to walk in heels and all that sort of stuff where you can’t have a better teacher than a Miss America.

A quarter-final with Serena Williams, who has been a nemesis to her in the past, most recently in the French Open. But Azarenka is looking strong again. That is going to be a smashing match.

Timea Bacsinszky has worked out how to deal with those forehand slices from Monica Niculescu. The 15th seed leads 3-0 in the third set.

Over on Court 1, the French Open champion, Stan Wawrinka, is duking it out with the 16th seed, David Goffin. Early days in the first set and they’re still on serve.

It’s looking grim for Belinda Bencic after she drops the first set 6-2 to Victoria Azarenka, the former world No1 who is beginning to offer glimpses of her best form after such a difficult time with injuries. The winner plays Serena Williams in the last eight.

Thanks to Gregg for covering for me there. I’m back. And so is Timea Bacsinszky, who’s taken the second set 7-5 against Monica Niculescu on Court 18.

Bencic is being given the runaround by Azarenka on Court 12. So much for the intrigue. The youngster is being sent scampering left and right as Azarenka uses her nous to wear down her opponent before hammering home her winners. It’s 5-2 with Azarenka serving for the set.

Here’s Owen Gibson with a very colourful report of Kyrgios’s defeat by Gasquet.

He got a code violation for swearing. He hugged a ball boy. He raged at “external bullshit”. He rowed with the umpire over whether he was taking too long to change his socks. He hurled his racket 10ft into the air. He looked at one stage as though he would repeat last year’s feat against exactly the same opponent atWimbledon and pull off an extraordinary comeback.

On Court No3 Agnieszka Radwanska has taken the first set 7-5 against Jelena Jankovic, the surprise conqueror of last year’s champion Petra Kvitova. She’s a battler. She’ll need to show some of that fighting spirit now.

Hello, Gregg Bakowski here. I’ll be offering the odd update here and there while Jacob is away. There’s an intriguing match under way on Court 12, where the 2011 and 2012 Wimbledon semi-finalist, Victoria Azarenka (seeded 23), is up against Belinda Bencic, the 18-year-old Wimbledon Junior champion of 2013. She’s going to be very, very good in the future. Not that she’s too shabby now, mind. She’s seeded 30 for the tournament. It’s 2-1 to Azarenka at present with a nervy double-fault by the teenager giving the more experienced player an early break.

Isn’t it entertaining enough when he just plays his best tennis, I don’t remember any of this kind of stuff when he was blasting Nadal out of the tournament last year and that was great to watch. Or does he have some tantrum or other written into his contract like McEnroe when he plays in the Masters’ event?”

Vasek Pospisil is back in it against Victor Troicki. The Canadian wins the third set - but trails 6-4, 7-6, 4-6.

No! Kyrgios had a clear look down the line and nets an easy backhand!

An awful drop shot from Gasquet, followed by an even lamer attempt at a lob, gives Kyrgios another set point. Can he take this one?

Which Gasquet saves with a pearler of a backhand down the line. Deuce.

Gasquet claws it back to 30-all - and then he double faults again to give Kyrgios a set point.

Deja vu? Serving to stay in the third set, Richard Gasquet throws in a double fault to trail 0-30...

Nick Kyrgios keeps dropshotting defiantly. One dreadful effort led to him facing a break point, a better one saved break point. He holds to lead 5-4. Gasquet had two break points in that game.

Madison Keys is into the last eight of Wimbledon for the first time, coming from a set down to beat Olga Govortsova 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Is she a contender? She’s already won one title on grass, at Eastbourne last year, and the ace machine could go even further.

Play has begun on the show courts. There’s the small matter of the Williams sisters on Centre Court, while Maria Sharapova and Zarina Diyas are out on Court 1.

Madison Keys has the third set locked down. She leads Olga Govortsova 4-1.

Whatever happens next, I cannot wait for Kyrgios’s press conference. He’ll probably be wearing a baseball cap back to front or something, the disrespectful little so and so.

This is ludicrous. Kyrgios plays a drop shot. It clips the net and goes over but Gasquet races forward and wins the point with a perfect flick. Kyrgios flings his racket into the air, but with a little too much force, and has to scamper off to catch it before it lands on the grass. If he’d got a bit more on that, it would have flown into the crowd.

Momentum swings back Gasquet’s way as he breaks back! Kyrgios didn’t put away a smash to bring it back to deuce and then he dumps an easy forehand volley into the net as Gasquet makes like Murray and forces him to play one shot too many. Kyrgios leads 3-2 in the third set but they are back on serve.

In what I imagine is a rather more sedate affair on Court 12, Victor Troicki is heading for his first grand slam quarter-final after winning the second set 7-6 against Vasek Pospisil. Troicki leads 6-4, 7-6.

Nick Kyrgios has another row with the umpire, James Keothavong, who is telling him off for taking too much time between games. “I’m staying on the court. if you’re going to get angry with me that, that’s another level. I’m changing my socks. You want me to ask him? Richard, I’m just changing my socks. Yeah, he’s fine.” He is hilarious. A spectacular toolkit at times, but magnificent value.

If you’re after live coverage of Serena Williams versus Venus Williams, you’ll find it here. Bryan Armen Graham, one of our American cousins, is your man.

Madison Keys is level. She wins the second set against Olga Govortsova 6-4 and you’d fancy the American to win from here.

Nick Kyrgios appeared to have completely checked out in that second set, his shots so bad that it almost looked like he was doing the tennis equivalent of threatening to run away from home after getting that code violation for swearing. But he’s trying to gee himself up at the start of the third. He holds for 1-0 and then has a couple of break points, which he can’t take. But he gets another when Gasquet slaps a forehand into the net and he breaks to lead 2-0 when the Frenchman slashes a backhand wide. Gasquet, not always the most courageous of players, will suddenly be thinking about losing that two-set lead to Kyrgios last year.

Richard Gasquet wins the second set! He leads 7-5, 6-1! Obviously he had to squander one set point with a double fault first, because he is Richard Gasquet and that is what he does, but it doesn’t matter once Kyrgios has looped a half-hearted backhand wide. Kyrgios recovered from a similar position last year against Gasquet but at the moment it looks like his mind is elsewhere.

Kyrgios has had a total meltdown since losing the first set but he’s finally on the board in the second, recovering from a double-fault to hold with an ace. But Gasquet will now serve for a two-set lead.

The first set goes to Coco Vandeweghe on Court 3. The French Open finalist, Lucie Safarova, played a terrible tie-break and not for the first time during this tournament, she’ll have to come back from a set down.

Kyrgios has completely fallen apart. Gasquet breaks again and leads 4-0.

Gasquet leads by a set and a break! He earned another break point and this time Kyrgios can’t salvage the situation. Kyrgios is all over the place. He’s sulking. Gasquet leads 7-5, 3-0.

Madison Keys is rousing herself in the second set, breaking for a 3-1 lead.

Nick Kyrgios has just been given a code violation for an audible obscenity. He applauds the umpire sarcastically. Then he saves a break point.

Richard Gasquet wins the first set 7-5! Nick Kyrgios is quickly in trouble on his serve, down 15-40 after some excellent shotmaking from Gasquet, and although he saves one set point with a big serve, he rams a wild forehand wide on the second! The youngster is down. But he’s clambered up from this position against Gasquet before - and he was in a similar predicament against Milos Raonic on Friday.

There will be a minute’s silence tomorrow at 11.30am at Wimbledon to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the London bombings. Play on all courts, except Centre Court and Court 1, will start at 11.45am instead of 11am.

Richard Gasquet has responded magnificently to being broken in the first game. He holds to love here and leads 6-5. Nick Kyrgios has to hold serve to force a tie-break.

Madison Keys, who hit more aces than any other woman in the first week, is in trouble. An upset is on the cards. Olga Govortsova, ranked 122nd in the world, has won the first set 6-3.

Victor Troicki has never reached the last eight of a grand slam before. The 29-year-old Serb is a step closer to putting an end to that sorry statistic after taking the first set 6-4 against Vasek Posipisil.

“Thanks, ball boy,” says Nick Kyrgios. He needs to win this game to stay in the first set. He trails 5-4.

Perhaps The Fanatics blast into various Walkabouts up and down the country, armed with giant nets, catching new blood to join the banter squad. New blood! New blood! New blood!

The Fanatics have just done a chant in support of Nick Kyrgios. A couple of them didn’t really seem to be that into it. They looked like they were dying inside as they launched into a chant about being “all about that ace, about that ace, no double”. I wonder if they stop you leaving The Fanatics once you’ve joined, forcing you to travel the world Being Funny. It must get tiring, all that forced jollity.

It’s a struggle for young Madison Keys on Court 18. She’s already down a break to the unseeded Olga Govortsova, who has a 4-1 lead in the first set. Govortsova is 26 and this is the deepest she has ever been in a slam. Meanwhile Lucie Safarova and Coco Vandeweghe remain on serve on Court 3.

While I was musing over Murray’s chances against Karlovic, Richard Gasquet showed some of his famous fighting qualities and cancelled out Kyrgios’s early break. I fancy that match could go the distance.

I’m not entirely sure that I agree. Murray is a superb returner and should have too much for Karlovic but it’s always awkward against that type of player - he could easily drop a set in a tie-break, as he did in the third round three years ago, and Murray actually has a great record against Tsonga against grass, having beaten him twice here and twice at Queen’s, his only defeat to the Frenchman on this surface coming in Nottingham in 2004.

Famous last words but I think Murray will be a lot more comfortable against Karlovic than he would have been against Tsonga. He's said before that he likes the challenge of taking on the very big servers, and I am expecting the quality of his returning to do the job for him. Murray in 3 or 4.

Victor Troicki, slayer of Dustin Brown and in very good form this year, looks to be a in sparky mood on Court 12. He’s already got a handy 3-1 lead against Vasek Pospisil, who skated dangerously close to the precipice against James Ward on Saturday. The winner of this match could play Andy Murray on Wednesday.

A sloppy couple of shots from Kyrgios presents Gasquet with two break points. These two are already into their stride. Kyrgios saves the first and then, when a forehand is called out, he mounts a successful challenge. The line judge cowers. The point is replayed. Kyrgios batters down an ace - off a second serve. Fair enough. From there, he holds.

What a start for Nick Kyrgios! It’s Gasquet who serves first and he quickly establishes a 40-15 lead. But the first sighting of the young Australian’s awesome power comes when he unleashes a barnstorming forehand down the line. Moments later, pushed into the left corner, he rips a backhand away to go to deuce on the Gasquet serve, before another earns him a break point. He’s utterly dominant. He drags Gasquet all over the place, overwhelming the Frenchman by pinging a relentless barrage of forehands all over the place, and he breaks for a 1-0 lead.

Ready ... play! They’re off.

Tok! Tok! Tok! The players are out and they’re knocking up.

Anyone for a round of golf? In the Royal Box today: Jamie Donaldson, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul McGinley, Ian Poulter, Sam Torrance and Lee Westwood.

Gasquet will be out for revenge today. He lost to Kyrgios here last year, despite being two sets up and having nine match points. Classic Gasquet. The Dimitar Berbatov of tennis, the kind of man who really should wear a neckerchief on court. Are you allowed to play tennis while smoking a cigar and having a nice, refreshing gin and tonic?

We’ll have action on four outside courts shortly. On Court 2: Nick Kyrgios and Richard Gasquet. On Court 3: Coco Vandeweghe and Lucie Safarova. On Court 12: Vasek Pospisil - boooooo! - and Victor Troicki. On Court 18: Olga Govortsova and Madison Keys. This should be good.

To be perfectly honest, it’s not that manic yet. There’s still 20 minutes or so before play begins. Outside the press centre, people are happily milling about, soaking up the docile atmosphere before all hell breaks loose.

Preamble

It’s Manic Monday!!!!!! We’ve got Serena versus Venus! Andy Murray versus Ivo The Terrible Double Hitter! Roger Federer versus Football’s Roberto Bautista Agut! Novak Djokovic versus Kevin ‘The BFG’ Anderson! Stan ‘Stan’ Wawrinka versus David ‘Tennis Boffin’ Goffin! Belinda Bencic versus Victoria Azarenka! All this – and much, much more! It’s gonna be manic! I’ve just seen Sue Barker cartwheeling into Broadcast Centre, Andrew Castle admiring a very fine pair of driving gloves and Tim Henman beating up a lackey for shouting “Come on,Tim!” one too many times! It’s manic out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
