Jaime Wilson bagged a double as Dumbarton cruised into the Scottish Cup third round with victory against Highland League Huntly.
The Sons will welcome Aberdeen to G82 in the next round of the competition after the comprehensive win over Allan Hale’s side, with Highlander Wilson the key man for a Dumbarton side who have scored just five times in the league all season.
And post-match manager Jim Duffy paid tribute to his side for the hunger they showed.
He said: “We were desperate to get through and play Aberdeen, and we managed to do that.
“We approached the game with a really good attitude, tempo and intensity. We’re not a prolific goalscoring team, so to score four for us is quite unusual and very pleasing.
“There were a lot of good performances but Jaime was absolutely terrific. It wasn’t just his two goals, it was his energy and workrate. He didn’t give defenders a minute all night.
“It was a good night all round for us.”
Despite the performance however, Duffy revealed that the cliche of never changing a winning team wouldn't be applicable in such a hectic run of fixtures - as he hinted at squad additions.
He added: "We tried something different with the front three, but that doesn't mean that the same three players will play on Saturday.
"They put such a shift in that we'll have to look at it. There are different aspects to picking a team now.
"We have to assess everyone and go with a group who I think can try and get us a result against Peterhead.
"We'll have to make changes, but it will depend on how they look on Thursday and if we possibly bring one or two in. But we'll definitely make changes, regardless of who played well."
Duffy recalled goalkeeper Chris Smith in one of three changes to the side which had lost to Forfar Athletic on Saturday, with PJ Crossan and Nick McAllister handed starts. Sam Ramsbottom, Robert Jones and Tomas Brindley dropped to the bench.
Straight from the off it was the hosts who looked the more threatening, with slick interplay between the front three of Crossan, Wilson and Adam Frizzell causing the Highland League side issues.
Ross Forbes twice flashed free-kicks wide of target before PJ Crossan dragged an effort wide of Euan Storrier’s goal.
Gradually Huntly settled into the game, and started to look the better side - albeit without forcing Chris Smith into action.
And their lack of a clinical edge was punished as Sons took the lead with half-an-hour on the clock.
Ross Forbes short corner found Adam Frizzell in space and he cleverly played in PJ Crossan, who flashed a ball across goal for Jaime Wilson to tap home.
Ten minutes later Sons had a vital second, and again it came from a Forbes corner.
This time the former Morton man’s deep delivery was perfect for the onrushing Ryan McGeever, who duly powered home a trademark bullet header.
The second-half followed a similar pattern, as Sons remained in cruise control.
McGeever almost added a second when he flashed a header across goal, before Euan Storrier reacted sharply to deny PJ Crossan after he burst through one-on-one.
Sons wouldn’t be forced to wait long for a killer third however, as they sealed progress after 67 minutes.
Ross Forbes was again the architect as his brilliant chipped ball sent Jaime Wilson in on goal, and the summer signing from Northcote City made no mistake with a lofted first time finish over Storrier.
By this stage Sons were playing like a side high on confidence, and they added a fourth seventh minute later in real style.
Adam Frizzell wriggled away from a collection of challenges before putting the ball on a plate for the onrushing Forbes to flick beyond Storrier.
Jaime Wilson then twice came close to a hat-trick as he was first denied by the onrushing Storrier, before being just unable to stretch to touch substitute Tomas Brindley’s inviting cross into the net.
At the other end meanwhile Chris Smith reacted sharply to deny Gary McGowan’s long-range free-kick, before the assistant’s flag denied Wilson a hat-trick after he had touched Morgyn Neill’s backheel in from close range.
In the end though it was job done for the Sons, who now add Premiership opposition to their packed fixture schedule.
