In a groundbreaking move, Wilson is set to release the Wilson Airless Gen1 basketball to the public. This innovative basketball is the evolution of the Wilson 3D Airless Prototype Basketball that was unveiled by K.J. Martin at the 2023 NBA Slam Dunk competition. The attention-grabbing black lattice-work design caught the eye of many, and now, one year later, fans of this technology will have the opportunity to own their very own Airless Gen1 ball.

According to Kevin Krysiak, the senior director of global research and development of team sports at Wilson, the overwhelming demand for this revolutionary basketball played a significant role in its retail release. Tech publications, NBA players, and NBA governors all expressed their interest, urging Wilson to bring the Airless Gen1 to the market. As Krysiak explains, 'There are just way too many people asking for it. We have to put it out some way.'

And put it out they will. The Airless Gen1 basketball will be available for purchase on Wilson.com starting February 16th, in three distinct colors: black, brown, and off-white natural. This release will coincide with the NBA Crossover activation in Indianapolis as part of the NBA All-Star weekend.

The Wilson Airless Gen1 basketball builds upon the original prototype with several upgrades. Nadine Lippa, the innovation manager at Wilson, describes the process as 'fun to work on' and highlights Wilson's commitment to exploring cutting-edge technologies to enhance their products. The 3D-printed ball meets the performance specifications of a regulation basketball in weight, size, and bounce. The lattice work, consisting of eight panel-like 'lobes,' eliminates the need for inflation.

Creating the perfect combination of materials took several years of experimentation at Wilson Labs in Chicago. Engineers aimed to find a material that offered both high energy return and durability. Through various iterations, they developed a proprietary custom elastomeric material with laser sintered powder, specifically tailored to meet the demands of the basketball.

In terms of the manufacturing process, the lattice work underwent slight modifications based on digital and physical testing to ensure consistent ball performance. Engineers added holes to the channels, which not only speed up the manufacturing and post-processing timeframe but also result in a more consistent ball. These holes also facilitate the removal of loose powder that can potentially get trapped in crevices. Additionally, each ball features a panel for customizable printing, allowing for unique details, such as specific numbering.

One notable change from the prototype's black design is the introduction of two new colors: brown and off-white natural. During the printing process, the base color of the polymer is natural, acting as a blank canvas for dyeing. Lippa explains that the black design was captivating and unique, but the inclusion of different colors for the retail release showcases the customization potential of this technology. The brown color has won Lippa's favor, while Krysiak admits to remaining enamored with the black design.

The concept of a 3D-printed basketball challenges traditional manufacturing methods. Lippa emphasizes the importance of pushing boundaries and embracing technologies like 3D printing, as it has the potential to revolutionize the industry. By eliminating the need for air retention, which is a common issue with traditional basketballs, Wilson hopes to drive the industry towards embracing this new technology. Krysiak believes that increased interest could eventually lead to widespread adoption, which, in turn, would help reduce production costs and material expenses.

While the Wilson Airless Gen1 basketball is just the beginning, Wilson has plans to continue innovating and rolling out future generations of airless basketballs. Lippa envisions a future with more products like the Gen1, while Krysiak sees this release as a stepping stone towards the realization of Wilson's airless dream.
