Wilmslow Road partially shut after car crashes into traffic light

A street in Rusholme has been partially blocked after a car ploughed into a traffic light in the early hours.

The southbound side of Wilmslow Road, approaching the junction of Park Crescent, has been closed since around 5am this morning, when a green Mercedes smashed into a traffic light.

Crews from Moss Side Fire Station were called to the scene shortly after 5am, to reports that a car had “collided with street furniture”.

Debris from the car, which has lost its engine in the collision, is scattered across the street, mixed with the remains of the traffic light and some bollards.

The crew was on scene for over four hours, leaving shortly before 9.30am.

Police were first at the scene, but there is not believed to have been any police involvement with the vehicle before the crash.

Power to the traffic lights has been removed whilst the area is cleared, with officers at the scene currently arranging the recovery of the car.

The driver is not believed to have been seriously injured in the smash.

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
