Willowbank School pupils could be sent to St Joseph's Academy as part of council proposals

Senior pupils at Willowbank School in Kilmarnock could be sent to St Joseph’s Academy because of lack of space.

A consultation will take place on the move, which would see S4 to S6 pupils from Willowbank going to the secondary.

If it goes ahead, a “specifically designed and reconfigured area” at St Joseph’s would be created for them.

The number of children attending Willowbank has nearly doubled from 44 when it opened in 2013 to 82 this year.

Pupils with specialist complex needs go to the school.

The decision to consult on the relocation was taken at the East Ayrshire cabinet meeting last week.

The meeting heard it would give the older Willowbank pupils a worthwhile experience.

Pointing out the benefits of a move to St Joseph’s, Willowbank head teacher Tracy Smallwood said attending the special school from the age of five to 18 can be like being in a bubble.

She described it as a “fantastic bubble” but questioned whether it is “real life.”

No definite decision has been made yet to relocate the children from Willowbank to St Joseph’s.
