Willie O’Connor gutted after costly error sees him lose to Gerwyn Price at World Darts Championship

Willie O'Connor says he is gutted after a costly counting error saw him lose to Gerwyn Price at the World Darts Championship.

The Limerick native looked to have a very good chance of knocking the Welshman out of the tournament before taking aim at double one instead of double two in the final set.

He failed to recover from the error, with Price winning the game by three sets to two.

Speaking afterwards, O'Connor told Dan Dawson’s podcast post-match: "I’m gutted to be honest. I’m obviously not learning from my past mistakes because it was there for the taking.

"I thought I wanted double two...I’m not sure. I thought I saw two on the board. To move forward you have to take opportunities and I had enough opportunities to move forward and I didn’t take them."

Price admitted that he was lucky to win the game.

He told Sky Sports: "After he threw his first dart [at double one], I was like 'happy days'. I knew he was going for the wrong shot.

"You need a little bit of luck like that, and I wasn't going to tap him on the shoulder and say, 'you're going for the wrong shot'. But I had a little bit of luck there and you need that sometimes."
