Willie Miller rips Celtic flops to shreds as he singles out 'away with the fairies' culprit

Willie Miller has slaughtered the Celtic rearguard in the wake of their meek showing against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

The man labelled "the best penalty box defender in the world" by Sir Alex Ferguson was happy to share his opinion in the wake of Wednesday's shcoker.

The Hoops defence were slack for both goals in the 2-1 loss that saw them dumped out of the Champions League.

Hatem Abd Elhamed was particularly off the pace when he allowed Tokmac to steal in for the winner with 15 minutes left.

And Miller said the Israeli right-back was "away with the fairies" as the Dons great slammed the standard of modern-day defenders and the training routines given to them by their managers.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, he said: “Do teams actually work at defending? Do they really work at defending?

“Do they get a back four in there, do they put six put against them, do they make it difficult, do they throw balls into the box, do they ask their defenders to put their head on that ball when it’s pouring of rain?

“I don’t know if they do. Every time you watched Celtic under Brendan Rodgers it was the same shape.

“He goes down to England it’s the same shape as well. The two centre-backs are there and the full-backs, their first thought is to get up the park, they’re like auxiliary midfield players.

“You then ask the goalkeeper to be like an outfield player.

“Elhamed was away with the fairies. I don’t know what was in his mind.

“But I bet you he was thinking about getting forward. “He had to adjust and he didn’t know how to adjust. The vast majority of defenders don’t have that pride … when you’re asked that question, you fail miserably."

Celtic were pushing for a winner after Ryan Christie answered the opener from Ferencvaros' David Siger in the second half.

Neil Lennon actually remarked that the match was easier than he expected with the opportunities and possession the hosts had.

But Miller remarked that's when the Parkhead club are at their most vulnerable in Europe.

“When the players actually think, ‘we’re going to get that goal’, that would send shivers up my spine," he added.

“Because I know in Europe, when you get into that mental state, that’s when you get hit with the sucker punch.

“If you let your guard down it’s going to knock you to the floor.

“That’s what happened last night. It’s a lesson but how many lessons do Celtic need?

“And can they learn from it? I’m not so sure.”
