Willie Collum sparks Rennes fury as maligned referee loses control of Champions League clash

Scottish referee Willie Collum is facing serious backlash after a number of controversial decisions in Krasnodar's Champions League clash with Rennes.

The Group E strugglers went head to head in Russia with only head-to-head separating them in the battle for third place.

Chelsea and Sevilla had already qualified for the round of 16 but it was no dead rubber with the fall-back of a Europa League spot up for grabs.

Tensions were already high, then, and matters weren't helped when teenage prodigy Eduardo Camavinga was taken out by a robust challenge that went unpunished by the Scottish official.

Grade One official Collum then sparked more French ire when he missed contact from Igor Smolinkov on Rennes' Benjamin Bourigeaud in the area.

The winger, who featured in both legs against Celtic last season, appeared to be impeded as he went to tap into the empty net at the back post.

But Collum waved it away and his decision was backed by a VAR review leaving the visiting team incredulous.

Krasnodar then went on to win the game, with Marcus Berg volleying home to send the French side crashing out of European competition.
