Willie Cauley-Stein to miss training camp due to left foot strain

The Golden State Warriors opened their 2019-20 NBA season with general manager Bob Myers delivering some news on the injury front.

First, Klay Thompson is “fine,” according to Myers.

Thompson was reevaluated, as expected, and apparently is progressing normally. The Warriors will not have another update on Thompson until after the All-Star break. Myers emphasized that this does not mean the team is targeting the All-Star break for Thompson’s return, but that the All-Star break is when the team will know with certainty whether he’ll play this season.

Unfortunate for the team, though, is that Willie Cauley-Stein will miss training camp due to a strain in his left foot. He is expected to miss all of October.

Myers called the injury “disappointing,” mostly for Cauley-Stein, but also lamented that the big man will miss training camp — the “formative time” with the team, especially for players who are new to the team.

With Cauley-Stein out, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Kevon Looney will get the start. But he also stated that he had “big plans for Looney” going into the season, even before Cauley-Stein’s injury.

“I’d like to play Looney as many minutes as possible,” Kerr said.
