Willian set for crunch festive showdown with old club Chelsea as Arsenal learn fixtures

Willian will face former club Chelsea in a cracking festive showdown on Boxing Day.

The Brazilian forward has just crossed the London divide to join Arsenal on a free transfer and will no doubt have been keeping an eye out for the clash with his old employers as the fixtures were released.

He will have to wait a little while longer for his first return to Stamford Bridge though as Arsenal are not scheduled to travel there until May 12 - the third from last game of the season.

Although he could well face Chelsea before the encounter in December, but only if the two sides are drawn against each other in the Carabao Cup.

Both clubs will enter the draw for the third round which is being played in September, with the fourth and fifth rounds to follow before the Boxing Day encounter.

The fixtures against The Blues will also be special occasions for defender David Luiz who made the same move last summer, and played a part in Willian's switch.

“He [Luiz] is very happy," Willian told The Gunners' official website : "We played together in the national team, we played together at Chelsea, and now at Arsenal again.

“I think we can do great things together, I hope so, but I’m very happy to be with him again.

“He said, ‘Come to Arsenal, come to Arsenal, I want you to come!’ So that was the conversation.

“He is a very nice guy, a top player and I’m very excited to play with him again."

Elsewhere in the fixture list Arsenal face a tricky tie to kick-off their campaign as they visit newly-promoted Fulham.

They then travel to champions Liverpool in only their third game, which coincidentally follows the same schedule as last season.

Mikel Arteta will return to The Etihad five games in as Arsenal take the trip to Man City ahead of clashes with Leicester and Man Utd.

The first north London derby of the season is scheduled for December 5 at Tottenham, with the sides then due to meet again in March.
