Willian's view on Diego Costa as Arsenal line up transfer for former Chelsea teammate

Arsenal are one of the clubs said to be showing the strongest interest in Diego Costa after it was confirmed the forward has been released by Atletico Madrid.

Costa, 32, had slipped down the pecking order at the La Liga club, and has been allowed to terminate his contract early, meaning he is available on a free transfer in January.

The Gunners are in desperate need of an extra spark going forward following their woes in front of goal so far this season, and are believed to be weighing up a move for Costa.

If they do manage to land the Spanish forward it would see him reunited with Willian, who he played with for three years at Chelsea.

In an interview with Brazilian YouTube channel Desimpedidos earlier this year, Willian revealed all about his relationship with Costa - describing him as "annoying" but a real handful to play against.

When asked about the fiery striker, Willian replied: "A great guy, on the pitch that’s how he behaves, he annoys every defender. He is a striker that no defender wants to face.

"He really is annoying. He makes a whole mess, gets the defenders a few yellow cards and after that they get scared of making a mistake and get the red card.

"So he really is the striker that the defender does not want to play against because of his many qualities.

"I played against him once I think in a Champions League semi-final. The year I arrived at Chelsea, we reached the semi-finals against Atletico but thank god after that we only played together."

It remains to be seen if they go on to play together again, but it is not the first time Arsenal have been linked with the player, with former manager Arsene Wenger admitting he wished he had tried harder to sign Costa when he first left Atletico for Chelsea.
