Willian's outrageous comments on Chelsea and Eden Hazard that are anything but

Chelsea winger Willian has come under fire from critical fans over comments in which the Brazilian appeared to try and claim the credit for Eden Hazard's impact for the Blues.

Speaking in an interview with Esporte Espetacular, the most important sports programme on TV in his homeland, the 30-year-old was asked about the Belgian and his departure for Real Madrid this summer.

On social media, quotes taken from his appearance were quickly picked up and shared, with some supporters shocked what seemed to be a boast from the two-time Premier League winner about being a match-winner equal to Hazard.

Unfortunately, without the proper context in which he made his comments, and the loss of his tone of voice in text compared to the audio from the show, Willian's words were read in the most severe manner possible.

Sports Witness translated what he said in his interview with Walter Casagrande, a former striker for Corinthians - the club that the Chelsea would one day like to return to - and the Brazil national team.

It was a rather informal chat between two footballers that contained humour as well as personal questions about Willian's late mother and his life off the pitch.

On Hazard, he said: "Yes, a great friend. When a player of this level leaves, with the quality he has, he's missed by any team. He will succeed at Real Madrid too, I have no doubt."

He followed up by making a joke.

"In those six years we played together, I decided half of the games, he the other half," said Willian, with a laugh. It was clearly not a serious claim, and he immediately cleared up what he really thought about Hazard.

"No, but he decided several games for us," added the Brazilian. "No doubt, he's a great player."

Speaking after his side's pre-season win over Reading, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard spoke out about Willian, whose future is uncertain amid discussions over a new contract.

"I know the club are talking to him," said the head coach of the Blues. "Willian and Callum [Hudson-Odoi] are both players I want in my squad.

"We've made some good moves this pre-season with Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek signing new contracts, two young players nailed down and the club are always trying to do that.

"From a football sense, I've made my ideas very clear. I'm working very closely with Marina [Granovskaia] and the board because these are two players that we want to stay for sure."
