Willian's negative comments, his 'outrageous wage demand' and Mikel Arteta's decision

Willian's days at Arsenal look to be numbered.

There was plenty of promise when the North London club signed the Brazilian last summer as the Gunners thought they had a player with a wealth of quality and experience from his time at Chelsea.

But his first season at the Emirates was a season to forget as he only managed one goal for the Gunners, as well as a number of uninspiring performances.

Arsenal are reportedly looking to cut their losses with Willian as Mikel Arteta doesn't view him as being a part of their long-term plans.

But it doesn't seem like it's going to be straightforward if his talks with Inter Miami are anything to go by.

Does Willian have a future at Arsenal? Comment below

'The worst period of my career'

Willian didn't hold back when he assessed the start to his Arsenal career back in March.

At that point, he hadn't got on the scoresheet as he labelled it as the 'worst period of his career'.

He told ESPN: "It really was a very difficult start, apart from that first game against Fulham, where I had a good performance, I managed to make a good game.

"Even after that game there were some games that we won, I even had a good game, but then we ended up getting a bad streak.

"I also got a bad streak and I think my worst professional time to date, since I went up at Corinthians and was sold to Ukraine, then I arrived at Chelsea, without a doubt.

"This phase that passed now was the worst time that I think I lived as a professional.

"Of course, when you live in a difficult moment, you get really upset and try to find solutions, a way to improve, try to help the team."

"That's what I've been doing all this time, I never stopped training, to work, to dedicate myself as much as possible.

"It took a little while to leave, but lately in the last games I've been playing well again, standing out with assists, playing well.

"So I'm happy to be back to find my good football."

Mikel Arteta decision

Willian's poor form suggested he would be one of the players surplus to requirements as Arsenal undergo a rebuild this summer.

And it's a decision that seems to suit both parties as the former Shakhtar Donestk player is open to a change of scenery to try and revive his career.

Willian is 32 years of age so even though Arsenal could see a better version of him next season, he doesn't fit in with the club's current situation.

Fans will question why they made the signing in the first place, but Arsenal thought he could have been a complementary piece to their young core.

Arsenal's horror season has opened their eyes up to the fact that they have to go all-in with this rebuild, there's no point in a half-hearted attempt.

Inter Miami wage demands

Finding a suitor for Willian could prove problematic, however.

He has two years left on his current deal and is said to be earning an annual wage of £7.2million at the club.

The forward isn't going to just walk away from that staggering pay packet unless a team can replicate his current terms.

And that proved to be the case when he was in talks with David Beckham's MLS side Inter Miami.

A report in The Sun has claimed the Brazilian’s wage demands were too excessive and have led to negotiations breaking down.

It's said Willian was asking for a salary increase with an annual wage of £8.7million - breaking down to a weekly figure of £167k.

If those are the figures Willian are looking for, there is a good chance he could still be an Arsenal player come the first day of the season.
