Willian makes huge Champions League claim after completing Arsenal transfer

New Arsenal signing Willian is aiming to win the Champions League with the Gunners after completing his move from Chelsea earlier in the month.

The former Blues winger revealed that a key factor in moving to the Emirates Stadium was Mikel Arteta’s plan to win the Champions League in the next three years.

Arsenal did not manage to qualify for the elite European competition last season, but managed a Europa League position after the FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea.

However, the Gunners were 10 points adrift of the top-four positions, but that hasn’t put Arteta or Willian off their three-year target.

The 32-year-old moved on from Chelsea after the Blues refused to offer him a three-year deal, and would only give him the two years.

So far this summer, the Gunners have brought in Willian and Cedric Soares, both on free transfers.

“One of the reasons I wanted a three-year deal was to be part of a plan, not just a player passing through," Willian told The Sun.

“When I talked with the manager, he told me why he needed me for three years. It was that he first wanted to qualify for the Champions League and win it by the time I left. That was what I wanted to hear.

“I was at Chelsea for seven years and won everything except the Champions League. Hopefully this move will give me the trophy I haven’t got as well as another Premier League title.”
