Willian held up as example of why Arsenal are "going nowhere" under Edu's leadership

Arsenal chief Edu has been criticised for his running of the club with the decision to sign Willian in the summer highlighted as a major error.

The Gunners welcomed the Brazilian from Chelsea on a free but handed him a three-year deal worth more than £100,000-a-week.

Their technical director worked in tandem with Mikel Arteta to seek out new recruits.

Former club captain Tony Adams has cited his inexperience when putting squads together as a serious issue however.

Arsenal have seen several young players like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe burst onto the scene over the past year.

Adams feels as if the signings of Willian and others stifles their development and laid the blame firmly at Edu's door.

He told Stadium Astro : “Why have you brought him (Willian) into the squad? If you have got him just to make up the numbers because he has got a bit of experience, where are you going with that?

“I have cried out about the recruitment on more than one occasion. Edu is very inexperienced and they were heavily reliant on agents to get players into the club.

"All of a sudden you have got Willian, Cedric, all the same agent.

“We have got so many kids coming through, don’t buy these players!

“You spot areas of the squad that are weak. You don’t go and get Willian on a three-year contract, that is going nowhere. That is really poor sports directorship.

“We all get ones wrong, but if you are building a club to win the league then you don’t fill up areas when you have good kids coming through.”

Edu, who was appointed in July 2019, was at the club when they signed the likes of William Saliba and Nicolas Pepe.

Neither have been successes with the young defender being loaned back to France without even making an appearance under Arteta.
