Willian has extended his deal at Chelsea to 2020. The Brazil midfielder had been a target for José Mourinho at Manchester United but has chosen to stay at the club he joined in 2013.

The 27-year-old was Chelsea’s most impressive performer in a disappointing campaign last season, earning him the player of the year award from the fans and his team-mates. He had two years remaining on his previous contract.

Willian was brought to Chelsea from Anzhi Makhachkala by Mourinho, who was keen to work with him again at Old Trafford. United instead turned to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who signed from Borussia Dortmund last week.

Willian’s decision to extend his contract is a boost for the new coach Antonio Conte, who will be presented by the club on Thursday.

Willian told Chelsea’s website: “It’s a dream to continue with this club and over the next four years I will try to help the team win more trophies. It’s been an amazing time for me since I joined three years ago. I’ve won titles and last season I was named Chelsea player of the year. I hope to be able to stay at that level during the coming seasons and achieve more success.”
