William Weir named as victim of Fivemiletown crash

Tributes have been paid to a young motorcyclist killed in a crash last night.

William Weir, 21, died when he collided with a silver-coloured Volkswagen Polo on the Belfast Road between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough on Wednesday evening.

First Minister Arlene Foster shared her condolences and said her "prayers are with this young man's family who have been plunged into unimaginable grief".

Fermanagh UUP councillor Victor Warrington said he knows the young man's family.

He added: "It is very sad for a family coming up to Christmas. There is never a good time of year but certainly coming up to Christmas leaves it more difficult.

"This particular bit of road unfortunately has had numerous fatalities in the last few years.

"Unfortunately this is yet another one. We are obviously in difficult times at the minute with the lockdowns and Covid and something like this just adds more heartache."

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "A male motorcyclist who sadly died following a road traffic collision just outside Fivemiletown yesterday evening was William Weir.

"He was 21 years old and from the Maguiresbridge area.

"The collision, involving a black ZNEN motorbike and a silver-coloured Volkswagen Polo, was reported to police just after 6pm yesterday and occurred on the Belfast Road between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough. Police and other emergency services attended the scene. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Police are appealing to anyone who was on the Belfast Road around this time, and who witnessed the collision, or who captured what occurred on their dash cam, to call 101 and quote reference number 1559 of 16/12/20.

"The Belfast Road, between Fivemiletown and Brookeborough, was closed for a time, but it has since re-opened."
