William Saliba's Instagram message ahead of Arsenal return amid talk of replacing David Luiz

William Saliba is already looking forward to next season.

It's safe to say the 2020/21 campaign was a mixed one for the Arsenal defender as he spent the first half of it on the fringes of Mikel Arteta's plans.

Having not made a single senior appearance for Arsenal after returning from a loan spell from Saint-Etienne last summer, Saliba was allowed to depart in the January transfer window as he joined Ligue 1 outfit Nice on a temporary basis.

That moved turned out to be beneficial as the defender went on to make 22 appearances across all competitions during the second half of the season and signed off with a goal in a 3-2 win over Lyon on Sunday night.

Despite the 2020/21 season not too long being completed, Saliba took to social media to send a message to his fans ahead of what could be his breakthrough year at Arsenal.

"It was a season with a lot of learning," he wrote on Instagram. "I’m looking forward to the next season, see you all soon."

Saliba's message comes after French publication L'Equipe reported that he is expected to be given a chance in the first-team next season by Arteta following the departure of David Luiz.

Speaking about the Frenchman last week, Arteta did reveal his plans for the 20-year-old amid talk of him replacing David Luiz as one of the options at centre-back next season.

"You will see in the summer, the possible replacement," said Arteta. "William [Saliba] is our player for sure and that's the decision we're going to be taking soon.

"When we finish the season we will sit down and discuss the roles of every member in our squad and how they can fulfil that role.

"He's our player so he'll be back here for sure.

"After that, we will make a decision based on an agreement of the role each player is going to have in our squad."
